ForestFacts fact #2:
Planting trees alone won't save the planet.
According to a study planting #
trees wherever possible on this planet could sequester 150Gt CO2 from the atmosphere. That's 4 times as much #
CO2 as we emit every year, or in other words: It would give us 4 more years to get to #
ZeroEmissions. But we do have to get to zero emissions anyway - we can never compensate #
emissions in the long run.
But when we get to zero emissions there is still a surplus of CO2 in the atmosphere and to get it out, trees are still the best solution, much better than any technical solution.
Also #
forestation (especially #
proforestation) is very important to save existing forests. If we go on like now by 2035 the #
amazon #
rainforest could start to emit instead of sequester CO2.
The #
GreatGreenWall's ambition is to sequester 250 million tonnes of CO2. That is 0,25Gt, so that only gives us 2,43 additional days to reach zero emissions. At least according to my math - please correct me if I'm wrong.
