Hi folks,

some of you may have followed my recent post concerning the possible shutdown of this pod. If you have not, have a look at the following post: https://pod.thomasdalichow.de/posts/1377103#18d54900cb8b0137c662005056008410

From the feedback of this post as well as additional thoughts that have gone into the topic, mostly hailing from the security front, I have come to the conclusion to shut down this pod. It's a bit more than one month from now. 2019-11-16, 04:00 PM (UTC+1).

That being said, here are the steps I will take in order to shut down this pod:
* closing registrations on this pod
* inform you in the form of this post
* send a mail to every user registered on my pod in a couple of days
* shut down the pod at the specified date

Up until the date of shutdown, you will have the possibility to download your data (visit https://pod.thomasdalichow.de/user/edit and scroll to the very bottom). After the date of shutdown, you will neither be able to use the pod nor download your data.

I will immediately erase every data concerning this pod and the data of the users having an account here. It will however take two months to rotate out of my backup cycle. So the data will eventually be erased some time in January 2020.

Wtih one freed IPv4 address at my disposal, I will - in time - set up a different service to contribute to a decentralized world of encrypted communication or encrypted data sharing. However, I have not yet decided what this service will be. If you know of any decentralized communication network that needs another node, a short comment would be very much appreciated.

Well then. Good bye and thanks for all the fish!
Thomas

Good to see there are responsible #podmins that inform their users with possible (scheduled) downtime....
Personally I created an aspect with all users of my pod and send pod/admin related info to that aspect.

Because of increasing spam accounts, all accounts with 2 days without interaktion (after registration) will be closed. Feel free to register again, when you are a false-positive

All others will get a warm welcome !!!

Both this pod and the corresponding #diaspora #docker image (koehn/diaspora) have been upgraded to v0.7.12.0. Enjoy! #podmin #podmins

About JoinDiaspora

for @podmin@joindiaspora.com @zauberstuhl

10 days ago, after the pod joindiaspora.com was completely broken for three weeks, its podmin wrote this post. I usually keep tabs with still unanswered questions open for a while, so I can ping again. Interestingly, when I wanted to check that post for updates, that post didn't exist anymore. It was deleted by the podmin.

Under the post I asked jd's podmin how he plans to prevent similar issues in the future. I commented that obviously asking for help within feneas didn't help as nobody responded to that question for 3 months.

Lukas then responded by calling me a liar, because somebody did indeed respond! And anyway, this was the first time ever that it took him so long to respond or solve such issues!

And .. wtf?
He was right, he got one response, but that response only added more questions, it was no response to the actual question looking for someone to help maintain the pod.
And I have no idea how on earth he could just state that similar issues never took him so long to respond to or resolve. I mean, just scroll #joindiaspora for a while! Joindiaspora completely looses federation almost every three weeks ("JD's a lonely island again", "Finally seeing other pods' content again after x weeks", etc). It constantly gives 502 or 504 errors to its users when trying to publish posts or uploading photos. Stream isn't loading for weeks. At times where it does actually work, it's mostly so slow that one can barely use it.
Users do talk about it. Users send posts with complaints. Users mention the podmin account and the podmin's personal account. And he usually simply ignores them, for weeks. His reaction this time was no exception, but his usual reaction. See screenshots.

Many people already left joindiaspora, because it's so broken. Other users desperately wait for the account migration tool, so that they can finally leave this broken pod.

If you don't ever see these posts: What kind of parallel universe are you living in?

So let me ask this again:

How do you plan to prevent such issues in the future? How do you plan to solve the issue of you being the only person with access to the pod/server - the only person who can fix problems?

Deleting your posts whenever someone in the comments asks about the future of your pod won't make JD's problems disappear.

#Podmins, I've included the scripts I've used to remediate fake accounts on our pod in the diaspora-scripts repo.

The first script, find-fakes.py will search the diaspora database for users that have no content and only a single log-in and write out the user ids to a file. You may specify --interval <days> to omit newly-created accounts.

The second script, purge-accounts.py will read in the list of user ids and either close (delete) or lock (disable) the accounts in bulk.

If you have no idea what this is all about, see this post.

Thank you podmins who stick to diaspora*'s social principles and community guidelines, and actively take care of your pods, your users, and their content. You help make diaspora* a place where users feel welcome and comfortable.

diaspora\*'s Social Principles

diaspora* provides every kind of creature - regardless of age, body size, disability, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, level of experience, nationality, personal appearance, race, religion, or sexual identity and orientation - the opportunity to connect in a decentralized social network. To help all of us to have the best possible experience on diaspora*, we envision a community which interacts respectfully.

diaspora*’s concept of a decentralized network allows no banning of members. Considerate interaction based on the ideals of the diaspora* community is therefore crucial to the wellbeing of this network.

As the diaspora\* community, we stand together against any kind of discrimination and exclusion. We don’t accept communication based on principles of chauvinism and nationalism. We disapprove racist remarks and downplaying of historic and current fascist violence. We oppose any kind of exclusion and the related structural and physical violence.

Stay calm, and be excellent to each other!

How to do this?
  • Use welcoming and inclusive language.
  • Be respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences.
  • Gracefully accept constructive criticism.
  • Show empathy towards other community members.
  • Avoid sexualized or violent language and imagery, and don’t give unwelcome sexual attention or make advances.
  • Don’t troll, post insulting or derogatory comments, or attack other community members.
  • Don’t harass people, either in public or in private!
  • Give people the benefit of the doubt. You might be wrongly interpreting what they have said.
