TIL: Palm trees are not considered trees!

I had do select all trees in a Google recaptcha challenge and wondered if I should select the pics with palm trees.
Well, according to Wikipedia, palm trees are not considered trees.
Seems like you actually have to be a botanist to solve Google's captcha stuff.

Totholz / Dead Wood / Bois mort

#archiveorg: https://archive.org/details/077454

Wikipedia

On the ancient roots of roots.

"At 385 million years old, the ancient woodland predates the rise of seed-producing plants, a group that includes almost all living trees. The Paleozoic forest is also home to the remnants of intricate tree root systems that bear an uncanny resemblance to those still around today."

we're twins!

Rockmelon (cantaloupe) germination - somewhat early but who am i to tell them when to make a start? i noticed these little fighters yesterday, while removing grass from around a peach tree (which may have been the scene of some last summer's snacking) There are more frosts due so this may be a somewhat short celebration of life, but they seem to think it's a good idea to live there. They're on a bit of a slope, so that probably helps. The peach tree doesn't - it's only just flowering but they are on the northern (sunny) side, so maybe the trunk of the tree acts as a bit of a frost barrier. There's also a lot of leaf-litter and bark-crumblings from a fallen bough, which would act as mulch i suppose. Anyway, go you little guys!

i'm tentatively excited and looking forward to a visit, tomorrow, from a fellow hortie. This may be one of the five or so types of ozian native oxalis. I've called in impartial eyes to help with the ID because i really really want it to be a particular oxalis that's quite endangered. I have also offered snacks.

and they're up!
a new type of rat-tail radish that i'm trying this year: Raphanus caudatus "Singara". The plants dont develop an edible root, but a long, bean-like pod with a flavour desc'ed as "as a cross between sweet turnip and peas" and "like a radish". The pods of Singara are longer than other rat-tail types which are often more like plump little pods with tails.

Dodonea viscosa - seed capsules
A widely-known plant, described as "cosmopolitan" and native to many countries. wikipedia has all there is to know about the plant https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodonaea_viscosa

Although it's oft-written that early British settlers in oz used the plant for brewing beer, i haven't as yet run into any evidence of or recipes for this, but there was a guy from the USA who used the "hops" (seed capsules or fruit, i do not know) to make bitters. He gets a mention in this forum thread https://aussiecraftbrewing.com.au/thread/47/dodonaea-viscosa-native-recipe-quest

Mine grow under manna gum (a food source for koala) - i thought it would be a nice cushion for the koala if they fall out of the tree.

Only the female plants have capsules, so if it's the lovely hues of the capsules that you're after it's sensible to take cuttings to ensure you'll grow a female plant. If you just want plants, male or female, gather the seed capsules, lay them on some soil and let em go! They're very easy to propagate. Not all the seeds will be viable, but you'll get quite a few seedlings.

The "cuttings" in a pot are D.viscosa (female) that have overwintered. Cuttings=thumb snippings - be sure to take a small "heel" with the twiglet. Half-hardened twiglets are the most successful but dont fuss too much if yours are still green, they'll probably be fine. These are from late summer/autumn when a vision came upon me (dontcha hate that?) "take some cuttings, why not" and they have starting to put on new growth. They may be ready to throw in the ground once the soil warms up. Although left outside they were protected from wind and frost (to some extent) under a big ole acacia cootamundra. Added tip: instead of "rooting hormone" i use honey. i'm a bad, bad vegan. There are lots of videos of how to dip a cutting into honey - it's easy; hold the cutting, dip the end cut end in honey. No fingernail shots involved (ever noticed how many youtube vids are actually about fingernails? my fingernails never look like that...)

the plant is Leptospermum laevigatum (Coastal Teatree/Victorian Teatree/Australian Myrtle), one the many teatree species allegedly used as a substitute for tea by British settlers a few hundred years ago, hence the common name. A good indicator of salinity in soils and, although generally alleopathic, it does fine in association with Agonis flexuosa. The oil is much the same as that of Leptospermum scoparium (Manuka) and Leptospermum petersonii (Lemon-scented Teatree) and has been found to be anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-viral. Bees love it. So do these bugs. I have no idea what the bugs are.

Get off mah lawn!
i've had this strain of feisty iris for 35 years 0.0
here's some info on keeping them alive. In the Southern Hemisphere, the ideal planting time is not July-September but somewhere around Summer-Autumn. Slackarse gardening suggests some time when there's rain, but not a lot (they dont like water terribly much, but need warmth and rain to set roots). I've found that they do grow if you just drop them on the groundand forget where you put them too. Extreme #slackarse-gardening.
