The Role of the U.S. Military in #World #Politics

Undeniably, the U.S. #military liberated #Europe from #fascism. Only because of this could very bad #war criminals be punished.

However, today, in contrast, one must ask how many tyrants have been brought to power by the U.S. military or can hold on to power because of it.

How the tentacles of the US military are strangling the planet

The #UnitedStates has more than 50,000 #troops in #Japan as well as a very large contingent of #ships and #aircraft. Seventy percent of the #US #bases in Japan are on #Okinawa island. Almost everyone in Okinawa wants the US #military to go. Rape by #American #soldiers – including of young children – has long angered the #Okinawans. Terrible #environmental #pollution – including the harsh noise from US military #aircraft – rankles people. It was not difficult for Tamaki to run on an anti-US-base platform. It is the most basic demand of his constituents.

But the #Japanese #government does not accept the #democratic views of the #Okinawan people. #Discrimination against the Okinawans plays a role here, but more fundamentally there is a lack of regard for the wishes of ordinary people when it comes to a US military base.
...
For decades now, Okinawans have complained about the creation of enclaves of their #island that operate as places for the recreation of American soldiers. Photographer Mao Ishikawa has portrayed these places, the segregated bars where only US soldiers are allowed to go and meet Okinawan women (her book Red Flower: The Women of Okinawa collects many of these pictures from the 1970s).

There have been at least 120 reported rapes since 1972, the “tip of the iceberg,” says Takazato. Every year there is at least one incident that captures the imagination of the people – a terrible act of #violence, a rape or a murder.

What the people want is for the #bases to close, since they see the bases as the reason for these acts of violence. It is not enough to call for #justice after the incidents; it is necessary, they say, to remove the cause of the incidents.
...
The US military has a staggering 883 military bases in 183 countries. In contrast, Russia has 10 such bases – eight of them in the former USSR. China has one overseas military base. There is no country with a military footprint that replicates that of the United States. The bases in Japan are only a small part of the massive infrastructure that allows the US military to be hours away from armed action against any part of the planet.

Arms industry supplying schools with ‘dystopian’ branded fairy tales for nine-year-old children | The Independent

Arms companies are supplying branded fairy tale stories for nine-year-olds as part of a "dystopian" marketing drive in primary schools.
Raytheon, manufacturer of the Paveway IV missiles currently being used by Saudi Arabia in Yemen, runs a national dome-building competition for children in UK schools every year.
I'm trying to think of suitable hashtags for this post, but many of them would be unprintable.

Hillel Rabin spent 56 days in #military #prison for refusing to serve in the #IDF. Now she opens up about her time behind bars, conversations with her fellow inmates, and talking to young Israelis about the #occupation.
Article: ‘Refusing to serve in the army is my small act of making change’

Excerpts:
I said that I was not willing to take part in any way in a system whose very essence is based on #fighting and #violent #oppression. I believe that this needs to change, and this is my way to make #change. This is my small act. I added that I have been vegetarian my entire life, buy second-hand clothing, and am against exploitation, capitalism, and sexism.

I oppose the #occupation because it is #violent, #oppressive, and #racist.

I didn’t fight with anyone in #jail. It was practice for my ego, for my ability to have a conversation, for my ability to be socially flexible. To be in a position in which people #disagree with me and in which I feel uncomfortable — almost threatened — but to be okay with that.

On Saturday 15th August 2020, it will be 75 years to the day since the end of the Second World War.

Members and allies of the Peace Pledge Union (PPU) will mark the day by mourning all victims of World War Two and speaking up about the need to resist war and work for just and lasting peace.

Sadly, the UK government and certain #military groups are instead encouraging people to “celebrate” the day, which was known in 1945 as VJ Day (“Victory over Japan”).

Remember and disarm

#Remembrance is important to the Peace Pledge Union. We seek to remember all #victims of war, both #civilians and armed forces personnel, of all nationalities.

The end of #WorldWarTwo came after unimaginable suffering for people of many nationalities, including in #Japan, #China and the Pacific. The horrors included the appalling treatment of civilians in several parts of east Asia as well as the #torture of British and other allied troops in #Japanese prison camps. In one of the biggest atrocities of the war, over 300,000 Japanese civilians were killed when the US Air Force dropped #nuclear bombs on the cities of #Hiroshima and #Nagasaki on 6th and 9th August #1945.

Remembering the #horrors of #war naturally leads us to work for #peace and #disarmament today.

UK and US say Russia fired a satellite weapon in space | BBC News

The UK and US have accused Russia of launching a weapon-like projectile from a satellite in space.
In a statement, the head of the UK's space directorate said: "We are concerned by the manner in which Russia tested one of its satellites by launching a projectile with the characteristics of a weapon."
The statement said actions like this "threaten the peaceful use of space".
The US has previously raised concerns about this Russian satellite.

Russian military parade: Cinderella

In Kaliningrad, during the military parade, one of the participants lost a shoe - in the manner of Cinderella - but continues to march. The head of the Baltic Sea Fleet arranged to reward the girl without a shoe for iron discipline: she did not exit the line and kept the array.

Thumb up to both of your comments … there were the #Rat Lines, #Stay Behind, #Gladio, #Shadow Army, etc., etc.

Germany was re-built with MANY nazis still (or again!) in place in #justice, #military, #education, #politics, #police, #industry, #secret services. Young people after the war were trained and “educated” by … old nazis. And now we’re surprised that we have new nazis

The Amphibious Warship USS Portland Has Shot Down A Drone With Its New High-Power Laser

The successful test of the powerful laser is a major step forward for the Navy's directed energy weapons ambitions.

By Joseph TrevithickMay 22, 2020
The San Antonio class landing platform dock USS Portland has successfully knocked down a small drone using its new laser directed energy weapon. The ship was first spotted with the system installed as it left its homeport in San Diego California in December 2019, which The War Zone was first to report.

The U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet announced the test of Portland's laser weapon, which is formally known as the Laser Weapon System Demonstrator (LWSD) Mk 2 Mod 0, on May 22, 2020. The test itself took place on May 16 at an unspecified location in the Pacific Ocean. The service described the event as "the first system-level implementation of a high-energy class solid-state laser," but did not say if this was the first time that the ship has actually fired the weapon.

"The Solid State Laser Weapons System Demonstrator is a unique capability the Portland gets to test and operate for the Navy, while paving the way for future weapons systems," Navy Captain Karrey Sanders, Portland's commanding officer, said in a statement. "By conducting advanced at sea tests against UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles] and small crafts, we will gain valuable information on the capabilities of the Solid State Laser Weapons System Demonstrator against potential threats."

Northrop Grumman developed the LWSD Mk 2 Mod 0 for the Navy as part of the Solid-State Laser Technology Maturation (SSL-TM) program and delivered it to San Diego for installation on Portland in late 2019, something The War Zone was also first to report. The service had announced that the San Antonio class ship would be the first to carry this laser weapon back in 2018 and had originally planned to conduct the first at-sea tests by the end of September 2019.

The Navy expects the 150-kilowatt class LWSD Mk 2 Mod 0 to primarily provide ships with an additional line of defense against unmanned aircraft and small boat swarms. The laser can also act as a dazzler, blinding optical sensors and seekers. The full system can use its own integrated full-motion video cameras, which are used to track targets and aim the weapon, to conduct surveillance, as well.

The SSL-TM program is just one of four active programs that the service is working on as part of the Navy Laser Family of Systems, which will hopefully serve as stepping stones to more powerful and otherwise capable laser weapons in the future. The Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS Dewey is also now equipped with what looks to be an initial version of the Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy (ODIN) system, another naval directed energy development that The War Zone was first to report on and that you can find out more about in this past piece.

Yom HaZikaron 2020 - one mnute of silence and the siren

Yom HaZikaron (Hebrew: יוֹם הַזִּכָּרוֹן‎, lit. 'Memorial Day') is Israel's official remembrance day, enacted into law in 1963. While Yom HaZikaron has been traditionally dedicated to fallen soldiers, commemoration has also been extended to civilian victims of terrorism.

The day opens with a siren the preceding evening at 20:00 (8:00 pm), given that in the Hebrew calendar system, a day begins at sunset. The siren is heard all over the country and lasts for one minute, during which Israelis stop everything, including driving on highways, and stand in silence, commemorating the fallen and showing respect.
By law, all places of entertainment are closed on the eve of Yom HaZikaron, and broadcasting and educational bodies note the solemnity of the day. Regular television programs cease for the day, and the names and ranks of every soldier who died for Israel are displayed in a 24-hour television broadcast.

A two-minute siren is sounded at 11:00 the following morning, which marks the opening of the official memorial ceremonies and private remembrance gatherings at each cemetery where soldiers are buried.

Many Israelis visit the resting places of loved ones throughout the day.

Memorial candles are lit in homes, army camps, schools, synagogues, and public places, and flags are lowered to half staff. Throughout the day, serving and retired military personnel serve as honor guards at war memorials throughout the country, and the families of the fallen participate in memorial ceremonies at military cemeteries.

Channel 33 has screened the names of all civilians killed in pogroms since 1851, and all fallen from 1860 (considered the date of the beginning of the Yishuv by the Israeli Ministry of Defense), in chronological order (rank, name, Hebrew date deceased and secular date) over the course of the day.

Logistics, geopolitical #ecology, and the #carbon boot‐print of the US military

Our geopolitical ecology framework interrogates the material‐ecological metabolic flows that shape #geopolitical and #geoeconomic power relations. We argue that to account for the #US #military as a major #climate actor, one must understand the logistical supply chain that makes consumption of #hydrocarbon‐based #fuels possible.

How many bytes are in one kilobyte? … or “The price of the ONE Jewish life (and Freedom) - steady increase”

My simple arithmetic… :)

One litre = 1000 millilitres

One kilobyte = 1024 bytes

Six(!) Israeli soldiers = 4 830 killers and other bloody terrorists (prisoners exchange, 1983)

Three(!) Israeli soldiers = 1 150 “-” (prisoners exchange, 1985)

Three(!) dead Israeli soldiers = 436 “-” (prisoners exchange, 2004)

One(!) Israeli soldier (man: Gilad Shalit) = 1027 “-” (prisoners exchange, 2011)

One(!) Israeli soldier (woman: Naama Issachar) = Alexander courtyard in Jerusalem(?) [1](2020)

Pidyon Shvuyim

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidyon_Shvuyim
Pidyon Shvuyim (Hebrew: פִּדְיוֹן שְׁבוּיִים, literally: Redemption of Captives) is a religious duty in Judaism to bring about the release of a fellow Jew captured by slave dealers or robbers, or imprisoned unjustly by the authorities. The release of the prisoner is typically secured by a ransom paid by the Jewish community. It is considered an important commandment in Jewish law. he Talmud calls pidyon shvuyim a “mitzvah rabbah”, a great mitzvah, as captivity is viewed as even worse than starvation and death (Bava Batra 8b).

Maimonides writes: “The redeeming of captives takes precedence over supporting the poor or clothing them. There is no greater mitzvah than redeeming captives for the problems of the captive include being hungry, thirsty, unclothed, and they are in danger of their lives too. Ignoring the need to redeem captives goes against these Torah laws: “Do not harden your heart or shut your hand against your needy fellow” (Devarim 15:7); “Do not stand idly by while your neighbor’s blood is shed” (Vayikra 19:16). And misses out on the following mitzvot: “You must surely open your hand to him or her” (Devarim 15:8); “…Love your neighbor as yourself” (Vayikra 19:18); “Rescue those who are drawn to death” (Proverbs 24:11) and "… there is no mitzvah greater than the redeeming of captives.” (Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Matanot Aniyim 8:10-11). The Shulchan Aruch adds: “Every moment that one delays in freeing captives, in cases where it is possible to expedite their freedom, is considered to be tantamount to murder.” (Shulchan Aruch, Yoreh De’ah 252:3)

Naama is free

Naama Issachar was born in the United States and moved to Israel when she was 16 years old. She holds dual U.S.-Israel citizenship.

Issachar joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and served as a military intelligence combat soldier. She was a “Lone Soldier,” a foreign Jewish man or woman who volunteers to serve in the IDF. Lone Soldiers account for approximately two percent of the Israeli military and are highly admired.

Naama is free, but our joy is mixed with tears

The release of a person from prison is always a joyous moment. When you’ve put your own effort into fighting for this individual’s release and you know for sure she is innocent, the joy doubles. Which is why I certainly am genuinely happy about my client Naama Issachar’s release, her return home and reunification with her loved ones. My heartfelt congratulations to all!

We have witnessed impressive solidarity with Naama on the part of Israeli society, lawyers, journalists, the diplomatic corps, and the government, including the highest-ranking officials. This is an inspiring example of effective collaboration between civil society, professional communities and the authorities. The story also deeply touched Russian journalists, lawyers, human rights activists, public figures, and ordinary people who simply cared. All of this instills the most genuine respect and appreciation.

It was impossible not to free Naama: her sentence was blatantly unjust, and we clearly exposed that fact at the hearing in the court of appeal, which received close international attention and interest, both public and non-public. The response given by the court of appeal was emblematic of the injustice that characterized this entire case: it contains 20 pages of the defense’s contentions regarding the irrefutable flaws in the sentence, and one page — a meaningless declaration — on why the defense’s claims were dismissed, without the slightest attempt to provide any substantive arguments.

And this is the very drop of poison that turns today’s simple joy into joy mixed with tears. Yes, Naama is free. But her case was a travesty of justice. She spent nine and a half months in detention, branded as a drug offender, an utterly bogus charge devoid of factual or legal grounds. Is that fair? Is that legal? Is that just? Despite the President’s assurance, everything is not okay.

One of the Soldiers

Like the others, he wears a uniform, but he is my brother. Like the others, he carries a gun, but he is my friend. Each soldier is unique through the eyes of someone who looks up to them.
