The EU must stop burning its #forests and biodiversity
NGOs ask the European Union to stop supporting fake ‘renewable’ #energy that burns forest #biomass. Burning primary woody biomass typically increases emissions for decades or even centuries compared to #coal, but emissions must be reduced and removed today.

Tiny forests

#Forests the size of tennis courts are being planted in towns and cities around the world. They use a special method from Japan which can grow a dense forest in just a few years. At that size they won’t make much of a dent in global warming but they do have many benefits including bringing increased biodiversity into the heart of the city.

Fools & Dreamers: Regenerating a Native Forest

Fools & Dreamers is a 30-minute documentary telling the story of Hinewai Nature Reserve, on Canterbury’s Banks Peninsula, and its kaitiaki/manager of 30 years, botanist Hugh Wilson. We learn about the commitment of Hugh and the Maurice White Native Forest Trust to regenerate marginal, hilly farmland into native forest, using a minimal interference method that allows nature to do the work, giving life to over 1500 hectares of native forest, waterways, and the creatures that live within them.

When, in 1987, Hugh let the local community know about his plans to allow gorse to grow as a nurse canopy for self-sown native trees, the response was sceptical at best and outright angry and disparaging for the most part – one farmer stating the plan was the sort to be expected only of “fools and dreamers”. Now considered a local hero by town and country folk alike, Hugh’s home at Hinewai overlooks a valley resplendent in native forest canopy, where birds and other wildlife are abundant and 47 known waterfalls are in permanent flow.

An inspiring, charismatic personality, Hugh’s passion and enthusiasm for his life’s project come through in every sentence he speaks. A dreamer who has made his dream come true, Hugh has proven without doubt that nature knows best – and that he is no fool.

Today is World Migratory Bird Day (Second Saturday of May)! Migratory birds are birds that travel from one place to another at regular times and often over very long distances, like from Alaska to Australia!!
~
These close relatives of dinosaurs, who gave us the idea of flying, connect environments all over the world in search of breeding and feeding grounds. Habitat destruction, over hunting and pollution have resulted in the need for these birds to be protected as many are now endangered.
~
These birds fly through many different jurisdictions so working with many different stakeholders, conservation is difficult, but still highly important. ~
This year's migratory bird theme is plastic pollution, with roughly 40% of all sea birds containing plastic inside of them. This isn't hard to imagine when nearly 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic enters the ocean every year. These birds also suffer slow agonising deaths from discarded fishing gear.
~
What can you do?? Cut single use plastics from your life, do beach cleanups, water way clean ups, raise awareness and recycle recycle recycle. 91 percent of plastic produced is not recycled!! (Also not a popular opinion but cats are responsible for 4 billion bird deaths in the US alone, please keep your cats indoors!!!)

Your forests are your second largest storehouses of carbon after oceans. You take them for granted, you cut their trees, you take away it's biodiversity, with your agriculture, your unsustainability manners, your mining and from fires. 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity is found in forests, yet, they are disappearing in silent. Because of human activity. Because your confort is way too good to be changed for more ethic and sustainable ways. At least, forests and everything they contain will still be on pictures, on videos and on books, even when there will be none of it left. Yes, one day, if you don't protect them, forests will be gone. It's 2019, and 40% of the world's forests has already been lost. Maybe you can protect the 60% left. Maybe you can restore the 40%. You can, all it requires is to trade your confort for action and change, and NOW is a good time to do it.
Avoid palm oil, reduce your footprint, buy responsibly, recycle, reduce your paper use, trade books. Make a change. Change the future.
"When we take away the forest, it is not just the trees that go. The entire ecosystem begins to fall apart, with dire consequences for all of us." 🌎💚
