Is there a #FDroid repo for the #CCCamp19 related apps available this year?

#Fedilab 2.13.0 is available on #Fdroid 🎉

@feynman
I recently started using #Aegis from #FDroid and am really happy with it. Another alternative would be #AndOTP.
@switchingsocial

I published the version 2.10.0 (in beta for few days for Google, in prod for #Fdroid).

Release notes: https://framagit.org/tom79/fedilab/-/tags/2.10.0

A new feature allows to export/import your blocked domains and share this list with comments.

„Vertrauen ist gut, Kontrolle ist besser“
Was auf zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen vielleicht nicht immer zutrifft, ist bei Computern aber auf jeden Fall richtig. Wie #Reproduzierbarkeit genau dieses Thema bei #FDroid verbessert, kannst Du hier lesen: https://nico.dorfbrunnen.eu/de/posts/2019/reproduzierbarkeit-fdroid/

Twidere hat ein Update bekommen #FDroid

I started to create my own #AOSP #Android build for my #Pixel3. It comes with #fdroid #chromium and a special host file. It is so simple to create your own builds, every month fresh builds:

It is amazing. I love it.
This tool has been created by one of the #Copperhead developers.

Two new ways to get apps nearby, without internet

There are many reasons why it is often better to do things without the

internet:your data plan is expensive, there is limited coverage in the
area, there is an internet outage or shutdown, or even something is
private and should not be online at all. Or even, if you are setting
up a new device, you can easily send all your existing apps over to
the new device. This is why F-Droid has included the “Nearby Tab” for
swapping apps and files without internet. F-Droid v1.7 includes a
major overhaul of the existing functionality, so it should work a lot
better now, especially when using Wi-Fi. Two new “nearby” methods
were added on top of that, to provide effective ways of exchanging
apps between devices.

The first is “hotspot” mode, where one device is acting as a Wi-Fi
Access Point. Android does not make it easy to do, since apps cannot
always known what the state of the Wi-Fi is. Thanks to the
accesspoint library from
long time F-Droid contributor @mvdan, it can do a lot more.

The second is using SD Cards and USB On-The-Go (OTG) flash drives as a
source of F-Droid repos. Flash drives can provide a very high
bandwidth method for transferring files, when they are easy to move
from device to device. Our goal is to make the whole user experience
as smooth as possible, so people can regularly move data with these
affordable, widespread data buckets. USB-OTG and SD Cards can host
standalone repos as well as mirrors of existing repos. Those repos
need to be copied to the flash drive first, like from a laptop. That
can be done using fdroid mirror , for example:

$ cd /media/user/F-DROIDORG
$ fdroid mirror https://guardianproject.info/fdroid
$ wget https://guardianproject.info/fdroid/repo/index-v1.jar
$ mv index-v1.jar fdroid/repo/

USB OTG support is new and alpha. It works, but needs a lot of polish
on the user experience. For example, it should show the scanning
progress. Also, Bluetooth is still flaky on many devices, some of that
comes from the devices poor support for generic data service over
Bluetooth.

FYI there is a discussion right now on the #fdroid IRC/Matrix about the gab ban by #Tusky. They have a problem with the fact that people are linked to a proprietary platform (youtube). And there seem to be some freeze peach people as well (I didnt read all of it).

Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. I’m interested in #fdroid, #gdroid, and #open-source.

I exported all my #Fedilab datas, uninstalled the Google Play app, reinstalled from @fdroidorg, imported my datas back and in a second all my accounts were back and perfectly working! That's amazing!,

Thank you a lot @tom79 to force me to switch, I also replaced many of my proprietary apps with FOSS alternatives and I'm fully satisfied! And thanks to #Fdroid community for this great tool!

In case you missed it, there's a privacy-friendly alternative to Google Play.

It's called F-Droid and only includes free open apps that don't track you:

https://switching.social/ethical-alternatives-to-google-play/

The installation process is slightly complicated, but once it's been installed it's extremely easy to use.

You can also follow F-Droid on here at:

Da gibt es was bei #FDroid

You don't have to use Google Play on your Android phone.

There's a free open alternative called F-Droid, which is much more privacy-friendly, and which you can install yourself relatively easily.

There's a simple instruction guide for beginners on switching.social:

https://switching.social/ethical-alternatives-to-google-play/

There's a much more detailed guide by @IzzyOnDroid here:

Eh, the new rules for the "Latest" tab in #FDroid v1.6 are rather bad IMO. Now it only shows apps that provide descriptions, translations, screenshots. All other apps - the vast majority - are now hidden. How am I supposed to get an overview of all new & updated apps now? At least give us a choice whether we want the new rules applied or not. Reverting back to v1.5.1 for now. 😑 @fdroidorg

Uh!

The current version of G-Droid indicates in a small green text from/to what version an updateable app can be updated. The next version will offer ALL old versions of an app, just as it is in the F-Droid app as well.

Not only is Wire #FreeCode, but under #copyleft licenses (a mix of GPL and AGPL depending on the component). Federation could be a ways down the track, but it's already an improvement on popular encrypted chat apps like #WhatsApp (non-free and owned by FB), #Skype (non-free and owned by MS), #Telegram (proprietary server), or #Signal, which has no desktop or web clients, and its developers are totally against #FDroid, and against federation on principle:
https://signal.org/blog/the-ecosystem-is-moving/

I have to say that I am seriously impressed with the F-Droid Repomaker utility. It's well-designed and easy to use.

#Tox is working really fine, !

The Tox Project

https://tox.chat/index.html

Tox began a few years ago, in the wake of Edward Snowden's leaks regarding NSA spying activity. The idea was to create an instant messaging application that ran without requiring the use of central servers. The system would be distributed, peer-to-peer, and end-to-end encrypted, with no way to disable any of the encryption features; at the same time, the application would be easily usable by the layperson with no practical knowledge of cryptography or distributed systems. During the Summer of 2013 a small group of developers from all around the globe formed and began working on a library implementing the Tox protocol. The library provides all of the messaging and encryption facilities, and is completely decoupled from any user-interface; for an end-user to make use of Tox, they need a Tox client. Fast-forward a few years to today, and there exist several independent Tox client projects, and the original Tox core library implementation continues to improve. Tox (both core library and clients) has thousands of users, hundreds of contributors, and the project shows no sign of slowing down.

Tox is a FOSS (Free and Open Source) project. All Tox code is open source and all development occurs in the open. Tox is developed by volunteer developers who spend their free time on it, believing in the idea of the project. Tox is not a company or any other legal organization. Currently we don't accept donations as a project, but you are welcome to reach out to developers individually.
