Mastodon is prone to bubbles.

When you look for new people to follow you check the public timelines, which by design mostly contains people already followed by people on your instance. It's hard to break out of that.

Here's what you do.

1) Go to https://mastodon.social/tags/YourTagHere but change the last bit to a hashtag of your choosing.

2) Click boost on all the cool stuff.

Also, use hashtags in your own posts and boost cool stuff with gay abandon!

Hello everyone !

📢 🔴 URGENT 🔴

An awesome software is dying, because its #developper has not time anymore to care of it.

It's an alternative of Adobe AfterEffect : Natron (https://natrongithub.github.io/)

Please, can Mastodon community search for a C++ dev, which want to maintain it ? or search for a company which work with free software ? It's very important.

Boost very appreciated

Thanks in advance for your contribution !

If you're looking for people to follow on here, try #Trunk:

https://communitywiki.org/trunk

It's an opt-in directory of users who are looking for followers, organised by topic. (People are only listed if they actively ask to be listed.)

Just go to the list you want (e.g. https://communitywiki.org/trunk/grab/Musicians ) and click on people to see their profiles. To follow them, click on "follow".

To be added or removed, message one of the admin accounts listed on Trunk's front page.

Can't wait for the new poll feature of #Mastodon ?We too so we've been working on bringing it to #Halcyon as soon as possible!Viewing them and answering isn't possible right now but they can already be created.Viewing and voting should be finished next week. You can already have a look at the poll editor here. How do you like it? #HalcyonDev #HalcyonLeaks

Man koennte mit #Halcyon ab jetzt Umfragen erstellen. Also rein theoretisch.

Quick technical question for the #Pluspora / #Diaspora nerds:
* Is there a #WordPress plugin to connect a blog to Pluspora for crossposting, just like #ActivityPub does for #Mastodon / #Fediverse ? The ones I found seem quite "old" or "obsolete" vs WP version... Thx!

Today, it was announced that one of Japan's large Mastodon servers, friends.nico, will be shut down after a month.

There have been changes to operators on large servers so far, but it is the first time for large servers to be shut down, and attention is being paid to what effect this may have.

Japan's mastodon user's timeline is temporarily bustling with this topic.

Official announcement

News Site Articles

friends.nico is the third largest server in Japan, with about 48,000 users.

It was the sixth largest in the world.

A company that operates a video sharing site, etc. operated it, but the profit deteriorated and it ended up providing many services.

Closing the Mastoson server is part of that.

We are very sorry for this.

#mastodon
It appears that the enterprise which provides friends.nico will go in bankruptcy if they won't close several web services they currently provide.

I had a friend that often uses that server. ( A jap Girl who drew me ones of the avatars I use) So I understand a bit and I'm feeling sorry and worried at the same time...

When you feel a node as your house... which you had been using for a long time and you lose it due censorship, banning or closing is like having lost a part of you and a part of your history. And you feel homeless for a while...

Hope their users could find a new house in mastodon/fediverse network.

The best wishes for them :/

When your world goes dark, My soul darkens with the yours.

Fediverse, how do I know what version my server runs?

Sometimes you're in a situation when you want to know which version of a software the instance you are using runs.
For example, the software rolls out a cool new feature you read about somewhere. But of coarse it's only in the very newest version.
Or you are on the search for a new instance and you want to check if it is somehow outdated or pretty modern.

So I decided to find out how you can find out what version the software is running.

#diaspora*

If you are logged in it's on the sidebar

And if you ain't logged in you can find it on the bottom of the landing page
Bild/Foto

#Friendica

In general: You want to access the site https://your.friendica.server/friendica

So you can type that into the url bar of your browser and you'll get a page like this:
Bild/Foto

You can access that page if you are logged in when you click your nickname-menu in the upper right corner, that choose "help" scroll down and there is a link to the version-page
Bild/Foto

If you are not logged in there is an Info-I in the upper right corner (e.g. on the log in page, but also on the register page…)
Bild/Foto

#Funkwhale

No matter if you are logged in or not, scroll down on any page there will be some footer and most likely in the very left column it tells you the version of the instance:
Bild/Foto

#Hubzilla

Access https://your.hubzilla.server/siteinfo by typing this into your address bar or for example by clicking Burger-Menu → Help → About this pod → Siteinfo as seen on the screenshot:

Bild/Foto

On that page you can see the version of your hubzilla hub:
Bild/Foto

#Mastodon

There seem to be several ways to find the version. For example, if you are logged in and you have the standard view with "first steps" in the very right column it tells the version on the bottom of that column:
Bild/Foto

Or you try to access one of the "meta"-pages of your server like /explore or /about/more or /terms. On all these pages the version in noted in the footer at the bottom of the page:
Bild/Foto

Matrix

I have no idea, it probably depends on your client. Maybe someone has a hint for me

#Misskey

On the landing page if you're not logged in the version info is in the bottom right corner. If you are logged in it's on the left side.

Bild/FotoBild/Foto

#Peertube

No matter if you're logged in or not on every single page on the verry bottom in the middle of the page/column it says something like
Bild/Foto

#Pixelfed

On any and every page of pixelfed there is a text "Powered by Pixelfed" in the bottom right corner. You have to hover that text with your mouse to get the version information.
Bild/Foto

#Pleroma

I couln't find a way to get the version on the web interface (tell me if you know) but with as post projects you can access the nodeinfo
Usually it is located at https://your.pleroma.server/nodeinfo/2.0.json but if not, you can find out the correct URL under https://your.pleroma.server/.well-known/nodeinfo. If your browser cannot render the JSON proper you can paste the content into a json viewer and hit "viewer".
Somewhere is a block "software" that contains the field "version" where you can find pleromas version. Don't confuse it with the "version"-statement for the document (for example 2.0 or 2.1 that is the nodeinfo-version, not the pleroma-version).

#Plume

As far as I can see it's written on every page in the pages footer on the left site:
Bild/Foto
easy huh?

#Wordpress

As of the wide usual customization of wordpress I couldn't find a way how most of the instances expose their version. Try to follow the nodeinfo -way I discribed at Pleroma because it seems some (many?) wordpress instances use it.

#WriteFreely

(once known as "write.as")
Like some other projects the version of a write freely instance is pointed out at the bottom of almost every page:
Bild/Foto
This article and all images are licensed as #cc-by so if you have more information about this or something is outdated: Feel free to take this text, modify and repost it as your own. Just don't forget to give me ( @Deus Figendi ) attribution.
The projects I chose to explain here were those with the most nodes on the-federation.info (except ActivityRelay because it's not so relevant for users). And the order is alphabetically.

Eugen, the creator of Mastodon and admin of the biggest Mastodon server, mastodon.social, talks about the challenges new users might face when they want to register a Mastodon account. In fact these problems aren't limited to Mastodon.

Every user planning to create an account somewhere in the #Fediverse has to make several decisions first:

1. Which platform?

Do I want to settle on #Mastodon, #Diaspora, #Friendica, #Hubzilla, #Pleroma, #Socialhome or one of the more specialised choices? Given that most of these platforms differ in features, chances are high that I can make a choice based on technical facts. Maybe I already know some accounts I want to follow, which might narrow down the list of choices since not all networks are connected (most notably Mastodon and Diaspory can't see each other, so I can either use the one I need or one of the multi-protocol platforms). Even if I can't decide yet, I'll just register one account for every platform.

2. Which server?

Now this might be the harder question. Let's assume I picked a platform and now want to register my account. Which server should I chose and why? For some platforms there are servers that are specialised on single topics, so if, for example, I am an English speaking Open Source evangelist and want to use Mastodon, there is a server that is just right for me.

But what If I have several main interests? There is no special community for people who like knitting and fishing. Or, more likely, what if I can't even decide on my interests right now? See, I'm interested in many things, nothing special though, just want to talk about things. Where should I register?

Of course there are many servers in every network that aren't limited to any set of topics. So I'll just choose the one that most other people already chose, right?

Well, nearly. And that's exactly Eugen's problem here. As a user, you want to use a server that

- is well maintained and is here to stay.
- has some more users so its public timeline isn't empty.

But from a technical view it would be great if users would spread equally over all servers. So I'll just choose the one that has the least users, right?

Well, nearly. Maybe a compromise is the way to go. It could look like this:

- Look for a server with more than one user.
- See if it exists for more than, say, three months.
- Look up the admins, see what they post, ask yourself if you like them.
- Have a look at the server's public timeline.

These tools might help answering a newcomer's questions:

But the main question stays: how do you explain this to a passer-by who just wants to quickly create a Fediverse account? Could a landing page featuring a "I'm feeling lucky" button that will automatically pick a random server help?

As to which platform to choose ... had I not overlooked that #hubzilla can reach #diaspora as well as the #activitypub network I'd have gone for #hubzilla instead of #mastodon ... well, I might move to #hubzilla eventually.
