Ideally a console one. Something like mutt for email or profanity for XMPP.

Apparently, it's possible to access #Pixelfed from within the #Mastodon App #Tusky since both services implement the same API. So let's get started with some vegan food pics. 😉😋 #awesome #federation #vegan #yummy #decentralization #fediverse

The Fediverse - A decision-making aid

There are four different protocols the #ActivitiPub, #Diaspora and #OStatus and there is also the #DFRN protocol which is as good as dead.

Mastodon is the number 1 network with over 4.000.000 users followed by Diaspora with over 600.000 members. On place 3 comes #Pleroma with over 30.000 members followed by #Hubzilla on place 4 with over 10.000 members and on place 5 comes #Friendica with almost 4.000 members.

According to this calculation it would be clear that #Mastodon is the clear winner but here the idea of the #Federation (Association) takes hold. Let's see who can communicate with whom and what the result is, start with the winner.

Mastodon can communicate with Pleroma, Hubzilla and Friendica so that results in 4.044.00 users.

Diaspora can communicate with Hubzilla and Friendica, resulting in a total of 614,000 users.

Pleroma can communicate with Mastodon, Hubzilla and Friendica and has a comparable reach to Mastodon of 4,044,000 members.

Hubzilla can communicate with Friendica and Pleroma, resulting in a reach of 44,000 members.

Friendica can communicate with Mastodon, Diaspora, Pleroma, and Hubzilla, resulting in a reach of 4,644,000 people.

Friendica is the clear winner in terms of reach. Now everyone just has to find out for themselves which platform suits them best.

How do you go with reshares of your content?

I usually at least check to make sure i have a like on a reshare of a post from me.

To show that i appreciate the reshare and to get me notified for comments. (if any;))
(well, i think one can do that w/o clicking on like, nor?)

Some people instead go and comment on the reshare. Which is basically fine... But

Then you discover that they're commenting robot like the very same sentence over and over on every single one.

Hmm.... is it rude to tell them that it might be annoying? To be honest, i got to hesitate to reshare posts from particular people because ... mhmm.... dunno .... feels weird..

How are you handling people resharing your posts? (do you care at all?;)

@Passagier 451 Heh i see yeah ... well .. as i said, from pluspora it did not work .. it's a tiny little bit of a hassle sometimes.... luckily most of the time #federation just works. ;)

Started testing #Socialhome to Socialhome #federation over #ActivityPub. Only following seems to work, while towards #Mastodon and #Friendica most things already work 😆

ActivityPub implementation news

A big milestone was passed today in the dev branch with #ActivityPub support being added for all the visibility levels of #Mastodon:

And #Friendica (over AP):

This is significant since making this happen required hopefully the last parts of refactoring delivery and receiving for the #federation library. The rest should hopefully be just implementing the remaining bits like shares, mentions, tags and other smaller details.

Light at the end of the tunnel, finally! :)

If you are thinking about joining the #Matrix, please do not use the Matrix.org homeserver. It has some disadvantages like disabled presence status and it is not good for the #federation at all to have one big instance where most of the users are bundled. Take a look at https://www.hello-matrix.net/public_servers.php for alternatives or even better, set up your own #synapse, which is pretty straightforward e.g. using @yunohost #selfhosting

Yay! Embarrasing for an association that promotes #federation, our main #social platform #Friendica had a break down in federation that was not realized for some time.

The issue was something related to #MySQL configuration which for some unknown reason became incompatible a few weeks ago. Furious hours long debug sessions finally made things work better and we're federating again ✌

Extremely sorry about that for any users of this server.

Friendica 2019.06 Released

Thanks everyone who contributed, be it directly by committing patches or new features, doing translations or reporting issues.

And now, we happily announce the availability of Friendica 2019.06. It contains many bug fixes, enhancements of existing functionality and some new features. The most noteworthy changes since the last release in March are:
  • Added native two-factor authentication
  • Added reshare counts
  • Added mascot to error pages (thanks to @lostinlight)
  • Moved Friendica private message and contact request to ActivityPub
You can find a complete overview of the changes in the CHANGELOG file.

How to Update

Updating from old Friendica versions

If you are updating from an older version than the 2018.09 release, please first update your Friendica instance to that version as there were several important changes in that version.

Please further note, that since Friendica 3.6 we use Composer for dependency management. If you are updating via git, you have to remember to update the dependencies as well.

Pre-Update Procedures

Ensure that the last backup of your Friendica installation was done recently. While testing, we did not encounter problems, but better safe than sorry.

With this release we raised the hard requirements to PHP 7. If you are still using PHP 5.6+, this version won’t work anymore on your system and we urge you to upgrade to PHP 7.1 at least.

Using Git

Updating from the git repositories should only involve a pull from the Friendica core repository and addons repository. Remember to also update the dependencies with composer.
cd friendica
git pull
bin/composer.phar install
cd addon
git pull
If you want to switch the branch (e.g. if you helped testing the RC code) please do so after the pull using git checkout master (or develop).

Be aware that the .htaccess file was removed from the git repository in the 2019.01 version. You might have to restore yours from a backup (if you have done local changes) or from the .htaccess-dist if you had not done it before.

Using the Archive Files

If you had downloaded the source files in an archive file (zip or tar.gz) please download the current version of the archive (friendica-full-2019.06.zip and friendica-addons-2019.06.tar.gz) and unpack it on your local computer.

As many files got deleted or moved around, please upload the unpacked files to a new directory on your server (say friendica_new) and copy over your existing configuration (config/local.config.php and config/addon.config.php) and .htaccess files. Afterwards rename your current Friendica directory (e.g. friendica) to friendica_old and friendica_new to friendica.

The files of the dependencies are included in the archive (make sure you are using the friendica-full-2019.06 archive), so you don’t have to worry about them.

Please be aware of the changes in the configuration format in the 2019.03 version. You should follow the instructions linked from your admin panel as soon as possible to move your configuration to the new location.

Post Update Tasks

The database update should be applied automatically, but maybe it gets stuck. If you encounter this, please initiate the DB update manually from the command line by running the script
bin/console dbstructure update
from the base of your Friendica installation. If the output contains any error message, please let us know using the channels mentioned below.

How to Contribute

If you want to contribute to the project, you don’t need to have coding experience. There are a number of tasks listed in the issue tracker with the label “Junior Jobs” we think are good for new contributors. But you are by no means limited to these – if you find a solution to a problem (even a new one) please make a pull request at github or let us know in the development forum.

Contribution to Friendica is also not limited to coding. Any contribution to the documentation, the translation or advertisement materials is welcome or reporting a problem. You don’t need to deal with Git(Hub) or Transifex if you don’t like to. Just get in touch with us and we will get the materials to the appropriate places.

Thanks everyone who helped making this release possible and have fun!

⚠️ Federation Update ⚠️

We have been testing remote follows and will be releasing a huge update very soon.

You will be able to remote follow a supported account (Pixelfed, Pleroma, Mastodon) on another instance. You will see remote posts in your Home Timeline.

The Network Timeline and support for other ActivityPub implementations will follow.

(If you run an instance, please update to the latest commits)
