Trump throws USA into chaos, threatens democracy itself, risks tens of thousands of lives, and incites civil war in order to...

... raise cash to pay his legal fees.

In case you ever wondered, What does absolute disregard for everyone else -- pure, unadulterated narcissism -- look like? this is it.

Trump tweets Biden won — but won't concede election or stop fundraising. Confused? Don't be.

From Nov. 16

Susan Del Percio, Republican strategist and senior adviser to the Lincoln Project

The money he is raising to fund his legal challenges is just a guise. It is far more likely that he is raising money in preparation for the cases that await him in New York.

... And yet he continues to raise money for what he calls his "Election Defense Fund."

This is why he refuses to admit defeat. The longer the president drags this out, the longer he can continue to raise money. [emphasis mine]

But the money he is raising to fund his legal challenges in multiple battleground states is just a guise. It is far more likely that he is raising money in preparation for the cases that await him in New York... Donald Trump is in a New York state of mind. And so are a pair of very ambitious New York prosecutors.

... So why fight so hard? Campaign cash. It is the one thing he will be able to take with him and use in the multiple lawsuits he will likely face in New York and elsewhere. Trump is only too aware that he can no longer use the Justice Department as his personal attorneys. He is also likely aware that he can use his campaign money to hire a very expensive legal team.

... the Commission has said that campaign funds may be used to pay for up to 100 percent of legal expenses related to campaign or officeholder activity, where such expenses would not have occurred had the individual not been a candidate or officeholder."

[Among the charges awaiting Trump...]

* Vance's office is looking into hush money payments
  • possible crimes committed by the Trump Organization
* Letitia James... is investigating whether Trump and his company have committed tax fraud

... James' case has been moving forward, and it has successfully compelled members of the Trump Organization to testify. The president's son Eric Trump was ordered by the court to appear for an interview, under oath, just last month.

... Trump is right to be worried. In fact, with such high stakes, it seems unlikely that either Vance or James would even attempt to pursue them if they thought they couldn't convict Trump or his inner circle. [emphasis mine]

Q: Did mishandling of the #TrumpVirus swing the election by outright killing a critical margin of voters?

A: No.

Comparing COVID-19 deaths and election margins in the four critical states AZ, GA, and NV, plus Wisconsin because reasons, we see margins well above deaths in all but one case:

State Electoral Margin Covid-19 deaths
AZ 29,861 6,109
GA 4,430 8,608
NV 22,657 1,845
PA 28,883 9,059
WI 20,539 2,256
Of the four critical states, any one of which is sufficient to provide a Biden victory, and adding in Wisconsin just because, only Georgia’s Covid-19 deaths exceed the popular vote margin (bolded).

TRUMP DID NOT LOSE THE ELECTION BY SUCCESSFULLY KILLING OFF HIS VOTER BASE, THOUGH HE ARGUABLY CAME CLOSE, AND NOT FOR LACK OF TRYING AND/OR INCOMPETENCE.

Other effects, e.g., disaffecting voters through incompetence, fear, etc, may have changed the outcome. But the needless death of 238,000 Americans as of election day did not do so of itself. Deaths have been doubling about every three months, and multiple doubling periods would be required to exceed vote margins sufficient to cchange overall results. With faster spread and rates of increase that time might be less.

Data from Worldometers (COVID-19) and ABC News (election returns).

Pissing off the wrong people

Trump used his campaign war chest like an ATM. Now it's dead broke and GOP donors are furious

[Donnie, you of all people should know how dangerous it is to piss off rich people. And on the flip side: Of all the things that you should know, the dangers of pausing off the rich should be near the top. That you failed this test is perhaps the clearest evidence of your idiocy. This is supposed to be your bailiwick!]

Suckers. That's clearly how major GOP donors feel after realizing that Trump's campaign is basically dead broke, he's dragging down the entire party, and he's even put Democrats in position to potentially take back the Senate.

... Eberhart and others feel burned after the state of Trump's campaign war chest has come into clearer view in the final months of the race. Some Republicans donors even founded a separate pro-Trump super PAC, Preserve America, that was explicitly not run by Trump's people because he's clearly not sending his finest. Republican megadonor Sheldon Adelson recently poured $75 million into that PAC instead of just handing it over to the Trump campaign.

[Let us pause to focus on the extreme irony and absurdity of this statement: "... a separate pro-Trump super PAC... explicitly not run by Trump's people..." In other words: These people feel they have to act as Trump's parents: "We'll give him some money, but he cannot be allowed to spend it himself."]

“You could literally have 10 monkeys with flamethrowers go after the money, and they wouldn’t have burned through it as stupidly,” veteran GOP strategist Mike Murphy told the AP of the Trump campaign's spending habits.

[Sorry. My bad. They don't view themselves as Trump's parents. They view themselves as Trump's zoo keepers. Come to think of it, that is a much better analogy.]

... Trump and his campaign aides burned through $1 billion like they were on a drunken Beverly Hills lifestyles-of-the-rich-and-famous bender.

[The article goes on to list some of the expenditures. Reading the list makes it clear why Trump is a failure at business.]

Worry in a more informed fashion: An interactive app allows you simulate the effects of turnout and voting preferences on the electoral outcome

How turnout and swing voters could get Trump or Biden to 270

... If Biden wins over just one percent of White swing voters, he would flip four states and capture 307 electoral votes, far more than the 270 needed to win the presidency.

But ... Let’s say Biden wins over some White voters, but turnout for this group rises to 70 percent while turnout for other groups stays the same. Only Wisconsin and Michigan flip blue, and Trump wins the election.

... This analysis helps illustrate a long-running argument in political science: Is it a better strategy to try to win over swing voters or to persuade people who will probably support you to actually vote?

[You can manipulate these factors (and more!) in this interactive simulation.]

Quote of note:

"'As the number of coronavirus cases mount in the US, experts are warning that the country is unusually vulnerable to the spread of the disease', the Financial Times reports."

"Public health officials and academics are concerned that a mix of high numbers of uninsured people, a lack of paid sick leave and a political class that has downplayed the threat could mean it spreads more quickly than in other countries.”

"The spread of coronavirus could be fuelled by patients reluctant to seek care because of the expense of the US healthcare system."

Brilliant art installation.

"The minimum wage machine allows anybody to work for minimum wage. For as long as they turn the crank, the user is paid in pennies as time passes. For example, if minimum wage is $7.25/hour (the current US Federal rate), then the worker is paid one penny every 4.97 seconds. If they stop turning the crank, they stop receiving money. The machine's mechanism and electronics are powered by the hand crank, and pennies are stored in a plexiglas box. The MWM is reprogrammed as minimum wage changes, or for wages in different locations."
