Why the #Guardian is changing the #language it uses about the #environment

The scale of the #climate and wildlife #crises has been laid bare by two landmark reports from the world’s scientists. In October, they said #carbon emissions must halve by 2030 to avoid even greater risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people. In May, global scientists said human #society was in jeopardy from the accelerating annihilation of #wildlife and destruction of the ecosystems that support all life on #Earth.

Stop using single use plastics!
Shoppers worldwide are using approximately 500 billion plastic bags a year. That's a 150 bags a year for every person on earth. Over 100,000 marine creatures and over 1 million sea birds die because of plastic yearly. If you conscioulsy use plastic without trying to switch to eco-friendly resources you are responsible for marine life deaths.

On the 1st of May 2019 the UK Parliament became the first country in the world to officially declare a 'Climate Emergency' this was a bold, yet needed act that the Parliament had done. The climate emergency means that carbon emissions must be reduced by 80% by 2050 (in comparison to 1990 levels) Ireland though took this a step further, declaring their set date at 2045. This move was a well necessary act and the Parliament is to be congratulated on this. It was a move in the right direction although this doesn't mean that Climate Change is under control yet. Every single other country out there in the world needs to declare some form of a climate emergency and needs to take action NOW! So what can you do about it? Well you can make your voice heard! Do things like tell others about this, go to protests issuing for action towards stopping climate change and share this post on your story or send it to a group chat! We can do this!

Today is us, tomorrow is you.
Every second, we get closer and closer to the future we have set and the
future we have chosen. Unstable governments, population explosion, wars
on every continent, famine, water shortages, environmental pollution,
cities sinking, rivers running dry, cultures disappearing - are we on the
brink of the end?
Driven by my passion for photography, I want to change humanity's view of
the future and the impact of climate change. I lived this first-hand when
ocean waters flooded the house where I was born and raised in the
Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott.
Places that were part of our daily lives and part of our collective
memory are disappearing, and I am photographing the present in the face
of an ominous future. But what if these moments are the future, based on
the words of scientists and the experiences of cities and human souls?
What if my camera were projecting these destined moments?
I imagine these photographs as signals to a monitoring device that
broadcasts to the future - and this device seeks to convince the world to
change.

The largest accidental oil spill in history began in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010 - the Deepwater Horizon oil spill . Some 134 million gallons of oil were released and about 2,100 km of the U.S. Gulf Coast from Texas to Florida were coated with oil (Some sources suggest that the amount of oil released was much higher). It later emerged through documents released by Wikileaks that a similar incident had occurred on a BP-owned rig in the Caspian Sea in September 2008.⠀
.⠀
Thousands of birds, mammals, and sea turtles were plastered with leaked oil. A 2013 study of living dolphins in Barataria Bay, found that roughly half were extremely sick; many suffered from lung and adrenal disorders known to be linked to oil exposure. Some 1,400 whales and dolphins had been found stranded by the end of 2015. Though the number of dead animals had begun to taper off, substantial decreases in dolphin fertility persisted.⠀
Birds were particularly vulnerable to the oil’s effects, and many perished—from ingesting oil as they tried to clean themselves or because the substance interfered with their ability to regulate their body temperatures.⠀
By late 2012 some 1,700 turtles had been found dead. It was estimated that up to 65,000 imperiled turtles had died during 2010 alone, mostly as a result of oil contamination. It was also estimated that some 300,000 turtles, some of which were originally from breeding populations in other parts of the world, were in the region of the spill when it occurred, leading scientists to point out the global impacts of the disaster.⠀
The larvae of commercially important fish species, including tuna, likely developed heart defects after exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from the oil. (britannica)⠀
.⠀
The list ist way too long, our pain is endless.⠀

Your forests are your second largest storehouses of carbon after oceans. You take them for granted, you cut their trees, you take away it's biodiversity, with your agriculture, your unsustainability manners, your mining and from fires. 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity is found in forests, yet, they are disappearing in silent. Because of human activity. Because your confort is way too good to be changed for more ethic and sustainable ways. At least, forests and everything they contain will still be on pictures, on videos and on books, even when there will be none of it left. Yes, one day, if you don't protect them, forests will be gone. It's 2019, and 40% of the world's forests has already been lost. Maybe you can protect the 60% left. Maybe you can restore the 40%. You can, all it requires is to trade your confort for action and change, and NOW is a good time to do it.
Avoid palm oil, reduce your footprint, buy responsibly, recycle, reduce your paper use, trade books. Make a change. Change the future.
"When we take away the forest, it is not just the trees that go. The entire ecosystem begins to fall apart, with dire consequences for all of us." 🌎💚
