So, as @Thorsten Claus motivated me again to contribute to #diaspora, here I am. And here is my TODO list...
- Review all the open pull requests and see which ones can be integrated
- Answer the support on #Framasphere
- Upgrade #framasphere to 0.7.15.0, I still didn't do that
- Update Ubuntu on #diaspora-fr
- Fix some trivial bugs to put myself back in diaspora code
- Draw some mockups of the UI for pod migration and post them on discourse
- Actually implement the mockups with HTML
- See with Thorsten how we make them live
- Start thinking about the next major release, in case they are long term things to do
- Post about what I'm doing to show people that diaspora\* isn't dead \o/

Welcome to the Fediverse!

Why do we call it by that name? A brief explanation can be found here. My favorite platform of the ones listed there is Diaspora, because of it’s short learning curve and simple, intuitive interface. In my opinion it’s the most ideal replacement for Farcebook with similar features, except for groups, but I’ll show you how I have created groups of my own right here on Diaspora.

Diaspora Takes Time to Become What You want it to Be.

That’s because you “build your own” experience here. Unlike Farcebook, #Diaspora will not suggest “people you may know” or “stuff you might like.” You tell it what you want to see and who you want to share with. If you are new around here, and especially if you don’t know anyone on Diaspora or elsewhere in the #Fediverse, you can follow #hashtags about subjects that interest you, and looking there, you’ll probably find some people you want to share with. You may also find people you’d rather ignore. Both adding new people and ignoring trolls are easy to do with just a couple of clicks.

Introduce Yourself!
Let your friends and potential friends know you’re here. Fill out a little bio and include an image. It doesn’t have to be your photograph of yourself, it can be anything you want. You can even make up a cool name to go by, like Joe McCool or something. There’s no need to use your real name here. In your #newhere or #Introduction post, share what hashtags you’re following, and be sure to include a few in your own description. Make sure your Intro is public!

Your friends, old and new, will help you.

For example, I might private message one of my friends to tip him or her off about a spammer, a bot, or a troll and advise my friend to use the Ignore feature to prevent them from commenting on your posts. Or I might suggest an awesome person to share with whose posts I think my friend will enjoy. Most importantly, since it takes time, give it time! You’re building it custom made, just for you.

Create your own Groups on Diaspora!

Some people do it simply by using hashtags. I do it using Aspects. From your personal page (reach it by clicking on your own picture if you’re viewing your Stream), look at your Aspects. You have a few to start with by default: Family, Friends, Work, and Acquaintances. But underneath that list you’ll find “Add an Aspect.” Give it whatever name you want. Dance Partners, Church friends, Trek Fans, Starwars fans, Alien Life Forms, whatever you like, as many as you like! You can put people you’re sharing with into one or more of those categories, then read and post to just that particular Aspect. That’s how I made my own groups. It works for me because I took the time to make it work.

Most of all, have fun! Make it your own, and celebrate your liberation from “Big Media!”

I just wanted to thank @Thorsten Claus for all the work he's currently doing on #diaspora, dozen of open PRs, that's so awesome!!

Notable Changes

* Support and recommend TOML as configuration format
* Removed support for defunct Uni Heidelberg OSM tile server, Mapbox is now required if you want to show maps
* Update mimemagic dependency that prevented new installations and updates

My problem with IRC is that it seems deader than CB radios. I hung out in #diaspora today while I was at work, just to check it out. I was ther for about three hours, there were twelve others there, not one word was said. I think I'll load it up tomorrow and just pop off with random thoughts :}

Our IRC channels have moved to Libera.Chat!

Of our various communication channels, IRC is the one with real-time communication. An "IRC channel" is a simple text-based chatroom - perfect for a quick chat that doesn't need to be stored for others.

IRC is not a new communication tool for diaspora\*, we just moved from the freenode network to Libera.Chat. If you have already used our IRC channels in the past, please update your settings to our new location!

If you want to join the chat without downloading anything extra, just click the link below, enter your nickname, and start the chat!

If you use an IRC client, the new details are:
Server: irc.libera.chat
Port: 6697 (TLS)
Channel: #diaspora

We'd love to see some of you there!

Our primary place for all project discussions is still our Discourse, which is a great location to store all relevant discussions and give people the option to engage regardless of their time zones.

Per API erstellte Kommentare

Hallo !Friendica Support,

Today I handed in a PR to #diaspora that allows a #podmin to take contact to its users.

On my pod I found it very useful to send a short message out to my user if something is going on or to clarify any report or whatever. To the podmins out there: make a review to this, if you like / dislike this feature to have on your pod.

Lien entre les #pods de #Diaspora
#question #help #aide

https://framasphere.org/posts/f2df61e09a37013989742a0000053625

Hey, Plusporans!

Content warning: I posted this as a reply to someone who was reposting the announcement about the issues Pluspora was having lately, but I figured I would post this just in general. I would like to extend an open invitation to you and anyone who is wanting or needing to s

Likes on comments in #diaspora is imminent as a Git Pull Request is already handed in for review. It is rolled out for test in the societas.online pod

My advice for a pluspora alternative if you're doing an art blog:

I use SocialHome for my art blog, because it’s very stylish for an art gallery blog and it natively provides multi-column. However, it lacks any support for “pluses” or “likes”, which means that you get no feedback even if someone likes it on diaspora or Mastodon. It also hides all comments behind clickable and very tiny comment icons. The big problem is that you don’t see comments in your stream - if that’s something you care about. (It’s something that I care about, and it was pretty much a deal killer for me as a daily driver.)

You still get e-mail notifications if anyone comments/reshares your posts, so you’ll still get notification on your own stuff. If you don’t mind losing “plus”/“like” functionality, then SocialHome can be pretty cool for an art blog, I think.

I think the pod I use, socialhome.network is closed to new users, but I would guess that if I simply ask Jason Robinson he’ll let you create an account on it.

If you really want the plus/like interaction, then either stick with diaspora or try out Friendica. I think Friendica is the biggest option that federates with both the diaspora and Mastodon sides of the federation. That’s unfortunately not saying much, because we’re still talking only around 5000 active users (compared to 10 times as much on diaspora and way way more on Mastodon). Note that even though Mastodon has a huge user base, don’t get any hopes up on seeing any interaction from Mastodon users. My interaction on the Mastodon side is NEAR ZERO. Your mileage may vary.

Anyway, Friendica has various features which might convince you to switch - like post/comment editing, plus/likes on comments, and support for community groups. It’s worth experimenting with, at least.

I have not had luck making a multi-column userstyle for Friendica that works robustly. I gave up on it a long time ago though … maybe if I tried again now I’d have better luck. Friendica is under pretty active development, so it may be more of a moving target to try and customize.

Anyway, to get some idea which pods are active out there, check out these Federation statistic pages:

https://the-federation.info/socialhome
https://the-federation.info/friendica
https://the-federation.info/diaspora

Another alternative is Hubzilla, which is related to Friendica. But I think Friendica is more popular and Hubzilla doesn't really offer compelling advantages over Friendica right now. If you only feel like checking one of them out, I'd suggest checking out Friendica.

but to tie-in...what if we took money less seriously, then less energy and morality spent on issues like cc's or regulating banks.

after all, people power requires definition...and divide and conquer works on the basis not only of disinformation, but also fearmongering.

If you accept that the system is not broke, then these conversations become a temporarily source of relief from the main role you are playing here: getting people down and thinking that the system can be corrected.

But put the grease fire out with your face, if you wish, for growth through suffering.

I've been thinking about consolidating these issues into regular periodical posts that we can use to advertise petitions, funding, and activism around the world. Then they can be our negative potential in the context of mainly good-vibes #diaspora so that people are more likely to moral balance for good, rather than against bad (which is what's happening here: people talking about how noting works because nothing gets done-- master the opposite and people will be talking about everything else, and doing what works for need to balance the joy they feel.) In practice my joy of late led me to deep clean the kitchen yesterday...and it feels like round 2 is on the menu.

@Oliver @SocialNoob

Backup your Diaspora Contacts

As Diaspora doesn't offer an export function for contacts yet, here is an alternative (for Windows users).
- navigate to https://pluspora.com/contacts?set=all
- scroll down all the way to get all contacts on one page
- mark everything and copy/paste it into a text file temp.txt
- open up a powershell, cd to the dir with temp.txt
(Get-Content ‘temp.txt’) -match ‘@’| Get-Unique | Sort-Object | Out-File 'pp-contacts.txt’
  • done, contact addresses are now sorted and unique in pp-contacts.txt
Maybe someone could parse the text file on #Linux or #MacOS and post or link it here? Thanks in advance.

It's been about a week of malfunctioning now on my #Diaspora pod. First it went offline for a few days. Then it came back but I'm unable to view notifications, so sorry if I'm not replying or if I missed anything.

The "search" function also doesn't work correctly, for example it doesn't find recent posts made on this very pod, whereas looking for the same tag from diasp.org, for example, yields the expected results.

And the whole website is generally slow and flimsy. My avatar, for example, seems to have disappeared, or at least I'm unable to see it from here.

Unfortunately the pod migration feature that had been promised several years ago has not arrived yet, not that I know at least, and so I'm still stuck to this problematic pod. Hopefully it will arrive before the pod glitches for the last time and goes down for good.

#FollowerPower

Can anyone recommand another #diaspora pod? This #pluspora is so buggy for me. It regularely doesn't show my timeline, sometimes first after ten times reloading. That has been ongoing for weeks now, it is very annoying, I'm missing lots of postings. I reported it to the owner, but no improvement, not even an answer. Is it a pluspora problem or have other pods the same issue?

#Diaspora parser problem?

Hi #devs,

I just stumbled upon a somewhat weird behaviour in the parser: In this comment I just wrote the url of an image was translated into a camo url, in spite of being in a code block - which actually should prevent exactly that.

Hope this helps,
Birne
