Eugen, the creator of Mastodon and admin of the biggest Mastodon server, mastodon.social, talks about the challenges new users might face when they want to register a Mastodon account. In fact these problems aren't limited to Mastodon.

Every user planning to create an account somewhere in the #Fediverse has to make several decisions first:

1. Which platform?

Do I want to settle on #Mastodon, #Diaspora, #Friendica, #Hubzilla, #Pleroma, #Socialhome or one of the more specialised choices? Given that most of these platforms differ in features, chances are high that I can make a choice based on technical facts. Maybe I already know some accounts I want to follow, which might narrow down the list of choices since not all networks are connected (most notably Mastodon and Diaspory can't see each other, so I can either use the one I need or one of the multi-protocol platforms). Even if I can't decide yet, I'll just register one account for every platform.

2. Which server?

Now this might be the harder question. Let's assume I picked a platform and now want to register my account. Which server should I chose and why? For some platforms there are servers that are specialised on single topics, so if, for example, I am an English speaking Open Source evangelist and want to use Mastodon, there is a server that is just right for me.

But what If I have several main interests? There is no special community for people who like knitting and fishing. Or, more likely, what if I can't even decide on my interests right now? See, I'm interested in many things, nothing special though, just want to talk about things. Where should I register?

Of course there are many servers in every network that aren't limited to any set of topics. So I'll just choose the one that most other people already chose, right?

Well, nearly. And that's exactly Eugen's problem here. As a user, you want to use a server that

- is well maintained and is here to stay.
- has some more users so its public timeline isn't empty.

But from a technical view it would be great if users would spread equally over all servers. So I'll just choose the one that has the least users, right?

Well, nearly. Maybe a compromise is the way to go. It could look like this:

- Look for a server with more than one user.
- See if it exists for more than, say, three months.
- Look up the admins, see what they post, ask yourself if you like them.
- Have a look at the server's public timeline.

These tools might help answering a newcomer's questions:

But the main question stays: how do you explain this to a passer-by who just wants to quickly create a Fediverse account? Could a landing page featuring a "I'm feeling lucky" button that will automatically pick a random server help?

As far as I am aware, the Article 13 only applies to commercial providers. That would mean that providers of alternative social networks, such as #diaspora pods, are not affected as long as they don't pursue a commercial interest.
I could even imagine that, with Article 13 in effect, more people are switching to alternative social networks with non-profit background to host their content. That would be even good news for diaspora...

Pourquoi avoir choisi #diaspora ? Tout simplement parce que j'aime les services décentralisés et les services protecteurs de la vie privée.

Merci #framasoft pour cette belle découverte !

Here another IMO great list of #mastodon instances with description:
https://github.com/distributopia/masto-world-overview

As to which platform to choose ... had I not overlooked that #hubzilla can reach #diaspora as well as the #activitypub network I'd have gone for #hubzilla instead of #mastodon ... well, I might move to #hubzilla eventually.

Diaspora is a secret

I listened to TWiG last night and heard Mike Elgin mention Pluspora as a place some Gplus refugees are going, which is true. Elgin was very big on plus for a long time and he was one of the few journalists aside from @Steven Vaughan-Nichols who posted much. What is strange is that Mastodon was mentioned, but Diaspora was not. Even Laconi.ca/Status.net got mentioned. Diaspora must be the best kept 8-year-old secret in social networks.

What do we have to do to attract more positive, creative people to the network?

More development would be nice, but that requires resources, and I won't harp on that again here.
If you like Diaspora, it would be good to give that a thought? How to spread the word? Share your experience in blogs, podcasts, conversations of any kind, where appropriate.

That's all I got.

This link shows the discussion for the last 7 years, pros and cons. It also offers a place to donate to the bounty that might make editing become a feature. The bounty is currently at $420. I would guess it should be closer to $1,000 but for all I know, that may not be sufficient. If you have the option to donate and want the feature, feel free to do so. Nothing will happen if you do not choose to donate, because Diaspora is free software and people like our hosts here on Pluspora are donating time and their own money to make it so.

Is it native as in using the D* API or a web-client?

I was trying to make an #easy-share-option for Android/D* a while back but discovered that at the time, the only part of the #API which was implemented was the #OAuth2 / #OpenID login.

I did start to implement parts of the API to achieve my goal (sloppily, and in PHP ;) ) but got sidetracked into trying to find out what the state of the D* API was at the time (ie nonexistent) so let it slide.

Maybe I'll chuck the code up on my #github at some point. #diaspora #client #native

I've Put My #Photos Up For #Sale! 🎉🎉🎉

After several days of #work, I've narrowed my #collection down to a handful of good #pictures, uploaded them #online and added them to my #website. (https://pravik.xyz)

Due to a quirk in my #student VISA, I cannot #sell the #prints myself, but you can #buy them (and other related products) from my stores on:
- Redbubble (https://www.redbubble.com/people/pravik)
- Society6 (https://society6.com/praviksingh)

Any #support is appeciated, if you're not personally interested in these types of things (which is understandable) I would be really glad if you were to notify someone who is...

I'll also be leaving a small comment under each item individually over the next few days... just a little heads up... (\^u^)

For those who are #newhere from other social networks, here’s a bit of handy vocabulary to help you navigate this new social network universe:
  • Protocol - An agreed format that enables software applications to communicate with (or “federate” with) each other. The two most heavily used protocols around here are Diaspora and ActivityPub. As an end user, you don’t have to care about the protocol you are using and you don’t ever see the “protocol” other than it enables or limits which users you can see.
  • Platform - The software application that implements a protocol(s) for federating. The Diaspora platform implements the eponymously named Diaspora protocol. Mastodon, for example, implements the ActivityPub protocol. Friendica implements both the Diaspora and the ActivityPub protocols.
  • Pod - The server(s) running a particular platform (software application). Also known as an “instance” or a “node”. For example, pluspora.com is one of the many pods running the Diaspora platform; mastodon.social is one of the many pods running the Mastodon platform; and libranet.de is one of the many pods running the Friendica platform.
  • The Federation - The collective of pods running platforms that implement the Diaspora protocol. This includes all pods running Diaspora (the software application), Hubzilla, Friendica, or Socialhome. The users on *any* of these pods can connect to and interact with each other.
  • The Fediverse - The collective of pods running platforms that implement the ActivityPub (and OStatus) protocols. This includes all pods running Mastodon, Pixelfed, Hubzilla, Friendica, Socialhome, or many, many others. The users on *any* of these pods can connect to and interact with each other.
  • The Free Network - The collective of pods in The Federation and The Fediverse, combined.
Hope that helps and doesn’t make this seem more complicated than it actually is. The main difference from other social networks is that no single entity owns and runs a platform. On G+ or Facebook, you are locked into that platform/company to talk to other users. In the Free Network, one set of volunteers writes the software and puts it out there for free, and another set of volunteers downloads the software and runs it on their servers and invites us to have user accounts for free. (But you should definitely donate to help them with the costs, if you can.) If we, as users, decide we aren’t happy with our current experience, we can change platforms or pods and still keep all of our friends/connections. On Facebook, G+, Twitter, and the like, you are locked in; and if you want leave, you go cold turkey.

Glad you joined us here in the land of choice.

Hello and a big welcome

to everyone new to diaspora\*

We're so pleased that you've decided to give diaspora\* a try. It's fantastic that you've joined us!

We hope that you quickly find your way here, and enjoy getting connected with people and content.

Here's a few tips for getting started:
  • There are some step-by-step tutorials on our project website covering the basics of how diaspora* works, and how to get connected with people. There's a link to these in the side-bar, should you ever want to read them in future, and there's also an in-app Help section you can access through your user menu (at the right-hand end of the header bar).
  • You can search for people by name or by diaspora* ID (which looks like an email address), if you know it, from the search field in the header bar. You can invite people to join you in diaspora* by sending them a link to our project website, from where they can choose their own pod to register with. Your friends don't need to be on the same pod as you in order to connect and communicate with you.
  • One good way to start getting connected with people is to start following some #tags of subjects that interest you (maybe #music, #photography, #linux, or #activism ... whatever interests you) so that you will see content on those topics in your stream. You can then start following people whose posts you find interesting, by placing them into one of your aspects.
  • If you have any questions, post something with the #question or #help tag, and people will try to help you. Make sure to make your post public so anyone who can help is able to see it!
diaspora\* has some very simple community guidelines, which we hope everyone will feel able to follow so that all members can have the best possible experience here.

We're trying to improve diaspora* all the time, fixing bugs, honing performance and adding new features. But how fast we can do this is limited by the time developers have. To improve diaspora* faster, we need more developers! If you've just signed up and can code, or know someone who can and who might be interested in joining our team, get in touch!
