Hey lifeforms using #diaspora! I usually don't share these things from Discourse here, but y'all might want to know that this is happening: https://discourse.diasporafoundation.org/t/removing-diaspora-s-current-chat-integration/2718?u=denschub

Also,
If you have a strong veto, this is your chance: Please explain why you think that an XMPP-based instant messaging feature inside diaspora* is required, and please also describe your ideas on how to iterate on the current implementation/model, or on good ways to start over. We’d love to hear your feedback.
but please do that over on Discourse instead of leaving a comment below this post. :)

Mastodon will demnächst das OStatus Protokoll rausschmeissen

Mastodon will demnächst das OStatus Protokoll rausschmeissen.

The end is near: Mastodon plans to drop OStatus support

Hello and a big welcome

to everyone new to diaspora\*

We're so pleased that you've decided to give diaspora\* a try. It's fantastic that you've joined us!

We hope that you quickly find your way here, and enjoy getting connected with people and content.

Here's a few tips for getting started:
  • There are some step-by-step tutorials on our project website covering the basics of how diaspora* works, and how to get connected with people. There's a link to these in the side-bar, should you ever want to read them in future, and there's also an in-app Help section you can access through your user menu (at the right-hand end of the header bar).
  • You can search for people by name or by diaspora* ID (which looks like an email address), if you know it, from the search field in the header bar. You can invite people to join you in diaspora* by sending them a link to our project website, from where they can choose their own pod to register with. Your friends don't need to be on the same pod as you in order to connect and communicate with you.
  • One good way to start getting connected with people is to start following some #tags of subjects that interest you (maybe #music, #photography, #linux, or #activism ... whatever interests you) so that you will see content on those topics in your stream. You can then start following people whose posts you find interesting, by placing them into one of your aspects.
  • If you have any questions, post something with the #question or #help tag, and people will try to help you. Make sure to make your post public so anyone who can help is able to see it!
diaspora\* has some very simple community guidelines, which we hope everyone will feel able to follow so that all members can have the best possible experience here.

We're trying to improve diaspora* all the time, fixing bugs, honing performance and adding new features. But how fast we can do this is limited by the time developers have. To improve diaspora* faster, we need more developers! If you've just signed up and can code, or know someone who can and who might be interested in joining our team, get in touch!

I've decided to package pod_feeder_v2 to make it easier to install and use. You can now run pip install pod-feeder-v2 instead of downloading the source from git, and it will be available as numbered releases from this point forward.

Importantly, the scripts in the root of the git repo are symlinked to maintain backward compatibility, but should be considered deprecated and will be removed in a future release. Please see the README for details on how to switch to using the new package.

Happy Birthday - 9 Jahre Friendica

Happy Birthday Friendica!

Many thanks to all who have contributed, the active and the alumni! <3 No matter how big the contribution was.

Laborious update of my #diaspora pod. The bundle/config file somehow became corrupted and contained a huge quantity of backslashes (and nothing more interesting!). The Ruby interpretor then used all available memory. Did anybody see that?

Hmm... #Diaspora devs...

I'm on VPN (ProtonVPN, which is not a transparent VPN), I have WebRTC blocked on my browser.

I clicked on the geolocation and it shows an address that is less than 100 metres from here.

This is creepy.

This is creepy.

#friendica #mastodon #diaspora

The poddery story

poddery.com ( #poddery stands for Pod Dery ) was started around 2010 (domain name was registered on 2010 December 07) by Joe Bivins. To place this in history of #diaspora,
1. The famous lecture "Freedom in The could" by Eben Moglen, was delivered on 2010 Feb 05.
1. This speech inspired 4 students of New York University’s Courant Institute (Illia Zhitomirskiy, Daniel Greppi, @Maxwell Salzberg and Raphael Sofaer) to launch a crowd funding campaign to replace #facebook on 2010 April 24.
1. The first developer preview was released on 2010 September 15 and first consumer alpha version was released on 2010 November 23. The first tag on the github repo dates 2010 December 2.

As you can see from these dates, poddery.com is one of the earliest diaspora pods. Possibly, third pod after joindiaspora.com and diasp.org (if you know another pod started before poddery.com, let me know in comments). When we organized our second Mini #Debian Conference in Pune in 2011, we opened an account in poddery.com (@Mini DebConf India) and its first post was on 2011 June 23.

We posted many photos of the events on this account and when we heard Joe Bivins was planning to close this pod on 2013 June 30, we did not want to lose these posts. We offered to take over the maintenance and launched Save Poddery Campaign in June 2013. We got around 50% of the target amount and with around 66% discount by KnightSwarm, we took over maintenance of poddery.com. We are running this service for about 6 years now. In between we added #xmpp service and last year #matrix.

You can follow the history of this service via @SavePoddery Campaign ** and @poddery.com updates accounts.

We are running our 3rd crowd funding campaign now. Thanks to everyone who contributed, money as well as time and effort to run the service.

About JoinDiaspora

for @podmin@joindiaspora.com @zauberstuhl

10 days ago, after the pod joindiaspora.com was completely broken for three weeks, its podmin wrote this post. I usually keep tabs with still unanswered questions open for a while, so I can ping again. Interestingly, when I wanted to check that post for updates, that post didn't exist anymore. It was deleted by the podmin.

Under the post I asked jd's podmin how he plans to prevent similar issues in the future. I commented that obviously asking for help within feneas didn't help as nobody responded to that question for 3 months.

Lukas then responded by calling me a liar, because somebody did indeed respond! And anyway, this was the first time ever that it took him so long to respond or solve such issues!

And .. wtf?
He was right, he got one response, but that response only added more questions, it was no response to the actual question looking for someone to help maintain the pod.
And I have no idea how on earth he could just state that similar issues never took him so long to respond to or resolve. I mean, just scroll #joindiaspora for a while! Joindiaspora completely looses federation almost every three weeks ("JD's a lonely island again", "Finally seeing other pods' content again after x weeks", etc). It constantly gives 502 or 504 errors to its users when trying to publish posts or uploading photos. Stream isn't loading for weeks. At times where it does actually work, it's mostly so slow that one can barely use it.
Users do talk about it. Users send posts with complaints. Users mention the podmin account and the podmin's personal account. And he usually simply ignores them, for weeks. His reaction this time was no exception, but his usual reaction. See screenshots.

Many people already left joindiaspora, because it's so broken. Other users desperately wait for the account migration tool, so that they can finally leave this broken pod.

If you don't ever see these posts: What kind of parallel universe are you living in?

So let me ask this again:

How do you plan to prevent such issues in the future? How do you plan to solve the issue of you being the only person with access to the pod/server - the only person who can fix problems?

Deleting your posts whenever someone in the comments asks about the future of your pod won't make JD's problems disappear.
