Climate emissions shrinking the stratosphere

A stark signal of the climate emergency and the planetary-scale influence that humanity now exerts
Humanity's enormous emissions of greenhouse gases are shrinking the stratosphere.
The thickness of the atmospheric layer has contracted by 400 metres since the 1980s, and will thin by about another kilometre by 2080.

several entries to the deportation center are blocked. #Berlin #b0704

Blocking the airport industry is always great in terms of #climatejustice, but even better when a deportation is blocked by doing so.

airport industry is a huge contributor to the #climatecrisis.
If you're part of a #climatejustice group, blocking an airport is always great, but even greater if your are able to chosen on a date a mass deportation takes place.

Let's all get better in connecting the different struggles.

#GreatGreenWall's #challenges (1/2)

The catalyst for the Great Green Wall is the daily impact of #desertification and #ClimateChange that is undermining the futures of millions of communities across #Africa's #Sahel region.

Since the 1970s, the Sahel has been heavily affected by recurrent periods of #drought. These droughts have threatened the livelihoods and future of entire populations across the region.

The lack of rain has led to the disappearance of livestock and the destruction of cereal crops. The great #famine|s that rocked the Sub-Saharan region in the 80s each affected millions of people. In addition, the high population growth rate is increasing demand for food and pressure to gain access to other natural resources which are the basis for livelihoods and the survival of the rural population.

Millions of people – particularly rural youth – are currently facing an uncertain future due to the lack of decent rural jobs and continuous loss of livelihoods due to land degradation and falling yields.

Flower power! The movement to bring back Britain's beautiful meadows | Biodiversity | The Guardian

More than 97% of meadows have been destroyed, but the fight is now on to restore them. They are essential for plants and insects – but is it wise to lose food-producing fields?

Meadows excel at storing carbon; grasslands in Britain store more carbon than any other habitat. “What’s really exciting is that the biggest levels of carbon sequestration happen when you convert an arable field into a species-rich pasture,” says Dines. Once established, a meadow is a stable store of carbon; plough it up, and the carbon is released.

I'm looking for people to conduct live interviews with on my Youtube channel about what positive changes could come about if we acted on the #ClimateCrisis

The things that would not only stop #climatecatastrophe but also improve our world significantly and create a future to look forward to. So we're talking negligible energy bills, endless water due to desalination technologies to combat water insecurity, stuff like that. If you're a #futurist and love talking about stuff like that, get in touch! :)

Would you be willing to comment on my draft manifesto for balancing my concerns about the world/society with my well-being? Perhaps you have some suggestions. Basically, I want to work towards co-creating a fairer society that pays attention to climate, inequality, and justice, but I don’t want to get so caught up that I feel unhelpful anger or helplessness.

Survival manifesto
A. I will take what action I can when I notice injustice in the news or online.
B. Clicking in order to “like” something isn’t action.
C. Action includes supporting the people involved practically; writing to politicians; discussing the issue with others to try to gain support; and [...]
D. I will look after my well-being, and in particular I will acknowledge the limits of what I can control, and avoid getting agitated about things outside my control.
E. I will interact politely with people who I disagree with.

I read Kiss the Ground (and other #ClimateCrisis literature) and I get so angry. As a species we're sinking into climate destruction and still, the world's largest #agriculture countries (looking at you, #US) can't take dramatic action. Only 53% of the country thinks #ClimateChange is major problem; only 49% think humans have something to do with it. This is the struggle of our time and, collectively, we're asleep.

A palm oil alternative could help save rainforests | BBC News

There's an ugly truth to the beauty products we slap on our faces and an unsavoury truth to the foods we eat: many are made with palm oil, which is responsible for the rapid deforestation of some of the world's most biodiverse forests, destroying the habitat of already endangered species like the orangutan, pygmy elephant and Sumatran rhino.
But now the biotech industry says it has come up with a solution - a synthetic alternative that doesn't involve burning down or clearing any rainforest. It says this could eventually replace natural palm oil in everything from shampoos, soaps, detergents and lipsticks, to food products like packaged bread, biscuits, margarine, ice cream and chocolate.

'World’s biggest iceberg heads for disaster
The mass is now moving straight toward a remote south Atlantic island populated by penguins and seals.
Scientists say a collision could cause a local, environmental catastrophe.Scientists expect the iceberg to grind over the seabed, crushing the island’s underwater life.

If the berg lodges at the island’s flank, it could remain a fixture for up to 10 years before the ice melts or breaks away, Tarling said. That could block some of the island’s 2 million penguins – including King penguins, Gentoos, Macaronis and Chinstraps – from reaching the waters to feed their young. The melting freshwater could also make the waters inhospitable for phytoplankton and other sea creatures that are crucial parts of the food chain.'. #ClimateCrisis

Four countries pledge night-train nirvana in Europe

Vienna-Munich-Paris, and Zurich-Cologne-Amsterdam, the first stage of what Germany has dubbed “Trans-Europ Express 2.0”, will start at the end of 2021.

Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland agreed to boost night-trains on their rail networks, with a host of new services.

Austrian climate minister Leonore Gewessler said that “the night train is one of the most environmentally friendly and comfortable means of transport. It has to become the transport means of choice.”

#ClimateChange bigger threat than #COVID: Red Cross

The world should react with the same urgency to climate change as to the coronavirus crisis, the Red Cross said Tuesday, warning that global warming poses a greater threat than COVID-19.
In the report, on global catastrophes since the 1960s, the Geneva-based organisation pointed out that the world had been hit by more than 100 disasters since the World Health Organization declared the pandemic in March.

"The study suggests that longer-term thinning throughout the 20th century—likely due to warming oceans—led up to a mass retreat event in the early 2000s. The result was a “step-increase” in the rate of discharge through outlet glaciers; before 2000, 420 gigatons of ice were discharged annually. In the years following, the rate increased to 480 gigatons of ice discharged annually."

"One of humanity’s greatest, present threats is the belief that real sufficient climate action is being taken, that things are being taken care of — when in fact they’re not. Not at all. The time for ”little steps in the right direction” is long gone and yet this is — at best — exactly what our leaders are trying to achieve. They are literally stealing our future right in front of our eyes."
