“What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.”

Please note that January’s Book of the Month is Autism and the Edges of the Known World: Sensitivities, Language and Constructed Reality by Olga Bogdashina and the Track of the Month is Prometheus: The Poem of Fire by Alexander Scriabin.

I watched clouds awobbly from the floor o' that kayak. Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, an' tho' a cloud's shape nor hue nor size don't stay the same it's still a cloud an' so is a soul. Who can say where the cloud's blowed from or who the soul'll be tomorrow? Only Sonmi the east an' the west an' the compass an' the atlas, yay, only the atlas o' clouds.

Next read: I've got the audiobook of Margaret Atwood's "The Testaments". Figured I'd intersperse the heavy stuff with *some* fiction.

This pretty little number is my next read, the Verso Book of Dissent.

Thanks to @mayel for the recommendation. I think I have a different edition, but it still looks good.

I finished "The Power" by Naomi Alderman today.

I didn't enjoy the read, but it was thought provoking. The central thesis of the book seemed to be, "our society is based on power, and if women were stronger than men we would see the same oppressive dynamics we see now, reversed."

That's a grim thought.

Siegfried Obermeier - Caligula - Der grausame Gott

Taschenbuch | ISBN13: 9783499131400 | rororo | 1993 | 684 Seiten
Harrys Regal
53 / ~2000 :)) #neverendingbookcoverchallenge

#AskFedi :boost_requested:

Can you recommend good #books for a 13th birthday present? My kid particularly likes fantasy and magic, devoured all 7 H---y P----r books in a month or so, but we live in a typically white, conservative English village, and so I'm particularly looking for stories by and about people outside that bubble.

Fischer Taschenbuch | 1977
Harrys Regal
51 / ~2000 :)) #neverendingbookcoverchallenge & Make love not war (Fairmondo)

Erst heute -?«

Kurt Tucholsky 1927

Leonard Cohen

Poem

Romane Gedichte / Lieder | Zweitausendeins | 1980

I heard of a man
who says words so beautifully
that if he only speaks their name
women give themselves to him.

If I am dumb beside your body
while silence blossoms like tumors on your lips
it is because I hear a man climb stairs
and clear his throat outside our door.
