Good bye Diaspora
I've just had a really depressing period on Diaspora, people posting pretty nasty accusations against me which aren't true.
Just to set the record straight:The weirdest thing is this nastiness began soon after a discussion about moderation policies when I stated publicly that Nazism is absolutely wrong, and that Nazi material should be banned. The timing makes me wonder if the issues aren't so much me publishing an ebook as me taking a stand against Nazism.
- Switching.social is not a simple list of alternatives, it's a site about privacy-friendly alternatives for non-technical people. I started the site precisely because (as far as I can tell) no one else seemed to be doing something like this aimed at non-techies. Other alternatives sites either assume prior tech knowledge or include non-private alternatives.
- There are no ads on switching.social, no sponsors, no trackers, no cookies, no visitor logs. I don't know anything about the people that visit, I don't even know how many visit, and I have no way of deriving any benefit from the site. I do the site beacuse I am very worried by the effect of privacy violations on society, and it's my way of trying to fight against the rot.
- Most of what I do isn't visible on the site itself: I put a lot of time into reading up about alternatives, writing explanations, answering people's questions, looking at alternatives, following and promoting developers' projects, promoting other people's requests etc, especially on the Mastodon account. Most of my switching.social time is spent getting people aware of privacy-friendly alternatives and getting them to directly follow the makers of these alternatives, only a minority of my time goes into the site itself.
- After I did the site and Mastodon account for a while, several people asked if I had a patreon, but I don't. So I did a set of long form essays about privacy and sold them as an ebook, as a way for people to donate. It was material that I wrote myself which was meant as a companion to the site, it wasn't just a "simple list". I've since discontinued the book (partly because the ebook sales site used proprietary platforms), and all it ever did was partially offset my hosting costs, it never made a profit. I don't make money from switching.social and never have done, that's not the point of the site. i resent people who claim I am doing this for profit, because it's not true and because it's not what I aim for either.
- I block people who I think are being nasty, but that's my right. It is ok to block people on social media, that's how it works. If someone shouts outside your window, you are allowed to shut the window and draw the curtains. If someone blocks you, you haven't been victimised, just ignored.
I've had arguments with people on other platforms, both centralised and decentralised, but it's never been so nasty and paranoid as on Diaspora.
Added to this, the moderation and blocking system on Diaspora is inadequate. There are posts on Diaspora that are absolutely vile, and while the "Ignore" function allows me to stop seeing posts by specific people, it doesn't allow me to stop seeing replies from those people to other people.
So, I've had it with Diaspora. Until its moderation/blocking/reporting tools improve and until the paranoid racist culture disappears, I don't really want to be on this platform any more.
