Discover Pleroma. An alternative to Mastodon

.
I have a lot of curiosity for the different places and software we encounter on the Fediverse, if we are open minded and like to travel and see places.

I love Travel in the physical world, and similarly, am enchanted by roaming in cyberspace, through the many corners and alleys, express lanes and boulevards, parks, of the Fediverse.

Mastodon is not all there is, not even close. It is the largest part of the Fediverse, in terms of instances (servers) and registered users.

But there's more and that is a good thing. Pleroma, have you met?

That is the Topic of today's Blog.

** Repost of one of my most popular Blog pages -- Following up with a Suggested Pleroma Instances one **

Minetest is a free open alternative to Minecraft, available for Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD and Android:

https://www.minetest.net

You can follow the project and make suggestions at:

Minetest has many modes and lots of mods. It supports online multiplayer servers, and there's a particularly well-developed world called Illuna which you can see in this excellent video:

Do you like Mastodon, but wish there was a privacy option to only post on your home instance without federating?

There's a fork of Mastodon for that called Hometown:

https://github.com/hometown-fork/hometown

You can still post normal posts that federate, but Hometown also lets you post non-federating posts if you prefer.

It also has other differences such as rendering full articles from Write Freely (and other federated blogging services).

It's by @darius

Something often requested is a libre alternative to Google Translate.

Some were asking whether there is a Fediverse alternative to Facebook Events/Groups.

There is one on the way!

It's called Mobilizon, and it had a successful crowdfunding to cover development costs. The beta version is due out in October.

It will be free, open and federate with ActivityPub.

You can follow it on here:

The /e/ foundation has started selling phones with their own version of Android preloaded on them:

https://e.foundation/

The /e/ version of Android is aiming to be de-googlised, but there are still a few remnants of G on them:

https://infosec-handbook.eu/blog/e-foundation-second-look/

Just wondering what people think about /e/?

Should I list it as an alternative to Android? Is it degooglised enough to consider as a "least worst" option?

NextCloud is a really good privacy-friendly alternative to Google Drive, Dropbox, Google Calendar and many other online services.

You don't need any tech knowledge to use it!

The easiest way to sign up for Nextcloud is to use their official "Simple sign-up" page, which directs people to their preferred providers:

(Of course, if you are good with tech you can self-host if you prefer 👍)

By far the most common request I get is for alternatives to Google's Re-Captcha.

The situation is so unclear that I haven't done an alternatives section on the site.

Do you have suggestions for re-captcha alternatives?

(I know this has come up before, but the discussions are scattered across many threads which people are failing to find.)

#Manyverse is an Android app for the #Scuttlebutt social network.

Scuttlebutt works differently to other social networks, it has no servers and your personal data is stored on your device. (Scuttlebutt and Manyverse are of course free and open software too! 👍 )

It's still slightly tricky to use, but Manyverse is trying to make it easier. You can find out more at:

Good bye Diaspora

I've just had a really depressing period on Diaspora, people posting pretty nasty accusations against me which aren't true.

Just to set the record straight:
  • Switching.social is not a simple list of alternatives, it's a site about privacy-friendly alternatives for non-technical people. I started the site precisely because (as far as I can tell) no one else seemed to be doing something like this aimed at non-techies. Other alternatives sites either assume prior tech knowledge or include non-private alternatives.
  • There are no ads on switching.social, no sponsors, no trackers, no cookies, no visitor logs. I don't know anything about the people that visit, I don't even know how many visit, and I have no way of deriving any benefit from the site. I do the site beacuse I am very worried by the effect of privacy violations on society, and it's my way of trying to fight against the rot.
  • Most of what I do isn't visible on the site itself: I put a lot of time into reading up about alternatives, writing explanations, answering people's questions, looking at alternatives, following and promoting developers' projects, promoting other people's requests etc, especially on the Mastodon account. Most of my switching.social time is spent getting people aware of privacy-friendly alternatives and getting them to directly follow the makers of these alternatives, only a minority of my time goes into the site itself.
  • After I did the site and Mastodon account for a while, several people asked if I had a patreon, but I don't. So I did a set of long form essays about privacy and sold them as an ebook, as a way for people to donate. It was material that I wrote myself which was meant as a companion to the site, it wasn't just a "simple list". I've since discontinued the book (partly because the ebook sales site used proprietary platforms), and all it ever did was partially offset my hosting costs, it never made a profit. I don't make money from switching.social and never have done, that's not the point of the site. i resent people who claim I am doing this for profit, because it's not true and because it's not what I aim for either.
  • I block people who I think are being nasty, but that's my right. It is ok to block people on social media, that's how it works. If someone shouts outside your window, you are allowed to shut the window and draw the curtains. If someone blocks you, you haven't been victimised, just ignored.
The weirdest thing is this nastiness began soon after a discussion about moderation policies when I stated publicly that Nazism is absolutely wrong, and that Nazi material should be banned. The timing makes me wonder if the issues aren't so much me publishing an ebook as me taking a stand against Nazism.

I've had arguments with people on other platforms, both centralised and decentralised, but it's never been so nasty and paranoid as on Diaspora.

Added to this, the moderation and blocking system on Diaspora is inadequate. There are posts on Diaspora that are absolutely vile, and while the "Ignore" function allows me to stop seeing posts by specific people, it doesn't allow me to stop seeing replies from those people to other people.

So, I've had it with Diaspora. Until its moderation/blocking/reporting tools improve and until the paranoid racist culture disappears, I don't really want to be on this platform any more.
If you still want to follow me, I'm on Mastodon at https://mastodon.at/@switchingsocial

As Mastodon uses ActivityPub, this account can also be followed from other AP-compatible platforms like Friendica etc.

Scuttlebutt is very unusual: it has no servers. All the data people share is stored on their own devices, and on the devices of people they share it with.

The free open events tool #Mobilizon has just passed the second goal in its crowdfunding of €35k.

This means it will be federated through ActivityPub, and give the Fediverse a good easy-to-use alternative to Facebook Events.

You can try their search at:

https://www.mojeek.com

I don't know much about Mojeek, but they seem to be using their own index rather than repackaging others'.

They also emphasise privacy and not tracking users.

They're a private company so it's unclear who owns them, but it's the same situation with DuckDuckGo.

If you want to use a free open alternative to MeetUp right now, there's GetTogether:
https://gettogether.community

It's currently got a lot of IT-related groups, but it can be used for any topic.

If you want to help with its development, the source code is here:
