Being more than just annoyed by the incessant #framasphere issues, I've finally decided to switch pods. Out of curiosity I'd like to give #Hubzilla a try.

Two questions, however, I have in advance:
  • Would the Hubzilla users among us recommend a certain pod? And if so, do you have reasons for your position?
  • Is it possible to migrate contacts from d\* to h? (That's the crucial one. I'd hate to recreate the whole list of almost 700 contacts.)
Any suggestions?

In a recent poll I discovered that 65% of you were not annoyed by my animations. Because of that I have added more to my emoji collection that you can insert into messages by just copying the code and pasting directly into the message. Average height of them are approx 100 pixels so they are not too big and will display nicely without overpowering the comment
Codes to do this within Diaspora can be found here
https://www.3dgifartist.com/pluspora

If you find that they do not work on other platforms it is possible to get the original lnk code from my Giphy channel

EU Copyright Directive daydream

The EU Copyright Directive is actually a clash between Big Tech and Big IP holders and the EU citizens are caught in the middle. Worse they are manipulated by both sides for there own purposes. It reminds me of the Digital Rights Management (DRM) discussion where IP holders were trying to limit the access of software and multimedia content with technical means. Leaving the user with bad products and restricting their rights such a making a back-up. Instead of prohibiting DRM the legislators, influenced by the IP holders, tried to criminalize the circumvention of DRM, communication about such circumvention, and the creation and distribution of tools used for such circumvention.

Now with Article13 history repeats itself. On one hand there are wealthy technology companies such as Google and Facebook. They have the lion share of all the profits made on the internet. The winner takes all principle on the internet has denied other companies to enter the arena and gain a significant market share. Mean while Big Tech has gained access to user data and profited from this on an unprecedented scale.

On the other hand are the Big IP holders that exercise, in their eyes, unlimited and perpetual rights to alll intelectual property and as we have seen with DRM enforce it with all means possible. In the middle is the internet user which in general is not a criminal and is not purposely trying to infringe copyright. Nevertheless this user has to pay in the same way as they did with DRM with access to the internet being subjected to upload filters that can reject any content that the user is trying to share.

The solution to the DRM problem came from the community providing users with tools such as Handbrake enabling them to make that back-up copy. This time around the solution is likely to come from the community again and the tool is probably already available. For that we have to go back to 2010 and the origins of Diaspora*. The initial inspiration for Diaspora* came from a speech by Eben Moglen where he proposed a distributed system of pods, called Freedombox. The idea of Eben Moglen was for every user to have a server with his/her data in his/her home. This idea never came to fruition and currently Diaspora* is a system of pods serving dozens or hundreds of users. What if we were to go back to this original idea. It's possibe. Freedombox is still here and the're similar solution like Freedombone and perhaps others that I'm not familiair with.

Freedombox has a planned feature to create a Diaspora* pod running on top of Freedombox and Freedombone allows the user to install a Friendica instance on it. Surely these homepods and instances will be free of all the restrictions mentioned in Article13 as long as they are not-for profit. Your pod in your home therefore doesn't need an upload filter and you can share all the information that you like as long as you're respecting copyrighted material. It will create an iron clad distributed network where you detemine what you want to share without passing any third party upload filter. It is also a message to both Big Tech and Big IP holders that no matter what they think of the community will always come back with a solution to be able to share data in a way they want to.

In the past I have spoken about the importance of owning and controlling your data and here's just one more reason why that is important: #Twitter keeps your Direct Messages (DMs) after the user deletes them and they are accessible internally and could be retreived by third parties such as crackers or even the Government with a warrant.

We should be more cautious and discerning about the data we hand over to these companies and this is one more reason why we should be supporting more open, federated networks and ensuring we are using the right tools to secure our personal and private conversations.

The Ability to Edit Posts

Probably the most requested feature on Diaspora
Do you want this? I do. That's why I have contributed to the bounty. Your pod and the Diaspora code it runs are independent of any big corporations. To survive, they depend upon the work of volunteers and contributors.

If you feel the need to be vocal about feature requests, consider being a part of the means to achieve them:

https://www.bountysource.com/issues/196897-user-should-be-able-to-edit-posts

Currently, the bounty for the post edit feature is $355. This is what a developer would get if they complete this feature. How many hours would that take? I'm pretty sure that amount is far too low to come close to compensation for time spent.

Hello, I'm #newhere to #Diaspora pod Diasp.org.

* I first heard about #Diaspora six months ago, but I finally decided to get involved and see what it's all about. I've been on here for a short time before deciding to create my first post of engagement and see what this website and #community has to offer me and what I can offer it.* I'm hoping to inject some positivity and leave something meaningful throughout the #Diaspora #community if nothing else.
  • If you have upvoted, liked, followed, shared this introduction, much is appreciated!

Hello and a big welcome

to everyone new to diaspora\*

We're so pleased that you've decided to give diaspora\* a try. It's fantastic that you've joined us!

We hope that you quickly find your way here, and enjoy getting connected with people and content.

Here's a few tips for getting started:
  • There are some step-by-step tutorials on our project website covering the basics of how diaspora* works, and how to get connected with people. There's a link to these in the side-bar, should you ever want to read them in future, and there's also an in-app Help section you can access through your user menu (at the right-hand end of the header bar).
  • You can search for people by name or by diaspora* ID (which looks like an email address), if you know it, from the search field in the header bar. You can invite people to join you in diaspora* by sending them a link to our project website, from where they can choose their own pod to register with. Your friends don't need to be on the same pod as you in order to connect and communicate with you.
  • One good way to start getting connected with people is to start following some #tags of subjects that interest you (maybe #music, #photography, #linux, or #activism ... whatever interests you) so that you will see content on those topics in your stream. You can then start following people whose posts you find interesting, by placing them into one of your aspects.
  • If you have any questions, post something with the #question or #help tag, and people will try to help you. Make sure to make your post public so anyone who can help is able to see it!
diaspora\* has some very simple community guidelines, which we hope everyone will feel able to follow so that all members can have the best possible experience here.

We're trying to improve diaspora* all the time, fixing bugs, honing performance and adding new features. But how fast we can do this is limited by the time developers have. To improve diaspora* faster, we need more developers! If you've just signed up and can code, or know someone who can and who might be interested in joining our team, get in touch!

Cómo conectar Diaspora* y Facebook a Mastodon

Diaspora a Mastodon

    https://pod/public/usuario.atom

    Sitio web: https://maker.ifttt.com/

Después elegimos New applet y clickeamos en +this.

Seleccionamos RSS feed y luego New feed item.

Una vez allí tocamos Make a web request y llenamos
    URL:https://instancia/api/v1/statuses?access_token=tokendeacceso

    Method: POST
    Content Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
    Body: status={{EntryTitle}} {{EntryUrl}}

Facebook a Mastodon

    Sitio web: https://maker.ifttt.com/

Después elegimos New applet y clickeamos en +this.

Seleccionamos Facebook y luego New status message by you.

Una vez allí tocamos Make a web request y llenamos
    URL:https://instancia/api/v1/statuses?access_token=tokendeacceso

    Method: POST
    Content Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
    Body: status={Message}}

Yeah, i simply switched the bookmarks in the bookmarks-bar a bit around, to let #diaspora (the pluspora.com pod actually) show up first, followed by planetromeo, f**kbook and then still the g+ link (followed by twitter, aliexpress.. you get it. ;))

That took some few days do get used to the new primary....

but .. let me tell you, it's still not a ghost town over there...

Some few people still are there (including me partially). It's dying slowly and gracefully..

It's a shame anyways... But here we are.

#federated in our own network ... with a fresh influx of new people, on their very own diaspora .. joining the big #diaspora. ;)

.oO( P.s.: I still comment over there, but i stopped posting new or at least original content. ;) About all the stuff i posted there.... it will die with the platform.... (I already got archived elsewhere .. not from my g+ stuff but other stuff..... the internet is still huge ;))

Testing the test: ;)

So, this is a test. i wish to know if shering images workts the way i think it should, therefore this is tagged #newhere. Dear users that are not from #pluspora or #joindiaspore, could you simply comment so i see if that works?

Hi Leute,

MeeeWeee has made a tool to import data from your Google+ account to their platform.
See article about it here

It will transfer over all your posts and also your communities and collections

I have no wish to do this and I'm quite happy for my seven years of data to disappear for ever (knowing Google not much chance of that)

It should also be noted that 8GB of storage is free but if you exceed that you will need 50GB at $4.99 per month
Is this going to encourage anty #gplusrefugees to move there? It certainly won't encorage me.

Thanks to @Craig Long for alerrting me to the situation

Will Google+ rise from the ashes.... Wil it bloody hell?

I have finally given up with G+, It's a place that gave me some happy memories but so did my first wife and I'm pleased I'm no longer with her either.
I'm starting to see many posts on G+ about trying to stop them closing and how members are going to go down with the ship and the whole place is just getting far too depressing

I would like to thank the many people here who gave me refuge in my time of need, you seem to be a lot nicer than some of the strange people I met on Meeeee-Weeeeee.
How long will it last here, who knows, I don't care as I have always liked a challenge and love starting from scratch, if life finishes here it may be time to revert back to Citizens Band radio and actually talk to people

European Copyright Reform: Article 13 puts alternative social networks at risk

If you live in the European Union, you have probably heard about the planned European Copyright Reform, and you are probably aware of its controversial Article 13.

The so-called Proposal for a Directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market intends to introduce new regulations around copyright. Article 13 would add new liability rules for online content-sharing service providers. While previously, providers could act on content that infringed copyright upon receiving a notice, the proposed regulations would render providers accountable for content as soon as it has been uploaded.

Effectively, this would put providers into a position where they have to implement strict upload filters to prevent users from uploading content that may infringe on someone else's copyright. This is dangerous, and it puts free speech, the diversity of opinions, and the internet as a whole at risk.

Article 13 previously contained rules to exclude platforms younger than three years, generating revenue of less than €10 million or with fewer than 5 million active users. Last week, however, a new draft was published, and the proposal now only excludes platforms matching all three of those conditions.

This is shocking. If Article 13 became a reality, everyone who operates a platform for users to publish content for more than three years would be 100% liable for everything happening on that platform, including content the operators are not even aware of. This makes operating an alternative social network effectively impossible.

For more details about the planned copyright reform, and information on how you can help, please check out saveyourinternet.eu. This does not concern just diaspora\* or your other favorite alternative social network. This concerns everyone. This is about health of the internet. Please #SaveYourInternet and fight against the #CensorshipMachine.

For reference, you will find below an open letter from diappora\* core team member Dennis Schubert, sent to those members of the European Parliament who currently support Article 13.
Dear Member of the European Parliament

The proposed Directive on copyright in the Digital Single Market has been the topic of discussions for many months now. In spite of many debates on this matter, not much progress has been made to address concerns of many respected experts, including many NGOs and even the United Nations' Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression, David Kaye[1]. According to my information, you are in the group of members of the European Parliament currently in favour of supporting this proposal, which is why I am reaching out to you to request you to reconsider the proposal, and especially consider the impact Article 13 will have on the Internet.

I am writing to you as a citizen of the European Union, but I am also reaching out to represent the many users and engineers behind alternative social networks. I am the project lead of diaspora*[2], an alternative, distributed social network based on free and open-source software. Together with similar projects such as Mastodon and Friendica, the world of alternative social media reaches over 2.5 million users on more than 4000 servers, including citizens who are part of your constituency.

Until now, the European Union has been seen as the epicentre of many efforts to build and maintain alternatives to large networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Many of these projects, their developers, and users are citizens of the European Union, and our projects enjoy great popularity among people as they are seen as privacy-friendly, local alternatives to the large systems built by American corporations. On many occasions in the past, European Union legislation has supported these projects and their principles, for instance with the recently implemented General Data Protection Regulation [4]to ensure high levels of data privacy for EU citizens.

Unfortunately, the planned copyright reform, and especially Article 13, will have an effect exactly opposite to supporting such projects and efforts.

The upload filters both explicitly described in and implied by the text on which you will be voting would force all online platforms to rely on technologies known to be error-prone, intrusive and legally questionable[5]. The proposal intends to hold providers of online platforms accountable for all content uploaded by users as soon as they have been published, contrary to the "notice and takedown" procedure currently in place, which allows providers to remove offending content upon receiving notice without the fear of legal repercussions.

For large platforms like Twitter and YouTube, this change would result in the implementation of stricter upload filters. Due to the technical natures of such systems and the strict liability regulations, those systems will be designed to block "too much", because blocking "too little" would put the provider at risk. Such over-cautious filters are a danger for users' freedom of speech, the diversity of opinions and creativity on the entire Internet, and would limit EU citizens' rights substantially.

Implementing Article 13 in its current form would be the end for smaller platforms and projects, as well as small and medium-sized businesses working on these or similar projects. Although in a previous revision of the proposal, platforms younger than three years, with revenue of less than €10 million, or with fewer than 5 million monthly active users would be excluded, a recent revision of the proposal now only excludes projects that meet all three of these conditions. For projects like diaspora*, which is significantly older than three years, this decision would result in all operators being responsible for every action their users do.

Non-profit projects like diaspora* are developed and maintained by people working voluntarily. Operators of servers running these software projects run those because they deem privacy important and want to provide an alternative to the large networks. They do not earn any money by doing this. The development, embedding and maintenance of infrastructure needed to filter copyright violations automatically requires a lot of resources, and implementing such solutions would thus simply be impossible.

If Article 13 became a reality, these projects and companies would not be able to comply with the new laws, so they could either cease to provide their services to European citizens and move their operations to a country outside the EU or stop their activities altogether. For Europe, especially as a community for strong privacy principles and independent, alternative solutions, this would be a huge step backwards and would make the established large networks, which quite regularly violate European principles, even more powerful.

With this, I am asking you to reject Article 13 of the Copyright Directive and to support all citizens who raise their voice for a free, open and diverse Internet.

Please do not use your vote to destroy the Internet.

Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

Dennis Schubert
